1. What would happen if the Earth stopped orbiting The Sun? By Euan Forsyth

2. What is an orbit? • An orbit is the way one object moves around another object in space. • It is made up of the distance between the two objects, and the speed they are going.

3. Earth’s orbit • The Earths orbit speed is about 15,000 mph. The Earth is 149,600,000 km from the Sun. It takes the earth 365 1/4 days to go round the Sun. • The Earth is tilted on it’s axis. The part of the Earth that is closer to the Sun is warmer than the part facing away from the Sun is colder. • The Earth is at a distance from the Sun where it is not too hot and not too cold for life.

4. Stopping the Orbit • If the Sun vanished some how • If the Earth hit something big and it slowed us down • If the Earth was stopped magically by something and it stayed at the same distance from the Sun

5. If the Sun vanished some how • We would stop getting heat and light from the Sun. • The surface and the seas of Earth would freeze and every thing that lived there would die. • For a while the bottom of the sea would stay warm enough for some sea creatures to live because of the heat from the Earths core.

6. If the Earth hit something big and it slowed us down • If we survived the impact the Earth would fall into the Sun. • We would all die before we hit the Sun because the atmosphere would burn up. • The Earth would be destroyed completely when we hit the Sun.

7. If the Earth was stopped magically by something and it stayed at the same distance from the Sun • We would not have seasons any more but we would still have day and night. • The length of the days and nights would always be the same. • The part of Earth that is tilted closer to the Sun would be hotter than the part tilted away from the Sun. • This would effect the way animals, plants and humans would live.
