  2. Introduction. • Full Name: The Lao People’s Democratic Republic. • Share border with PR of China,Vietnam,Mynmar,Thailand and Cambodia. • Population:5,8 million (2006). • Area: 236,800 sq. KM. • Landlocked and mountain country. • 70% high land. • 1,898 Km along the Mekong river • Independent in 1975.

  3. Introduction (Conti…) • Capital: Vientiane • 17 provinces 142 Districts • 49 ethnic groups • Annual population growth 1.7% (2006.) • Urban Population 4.1% (2006) • National Language : Lao (official), • Religion : Buddhism 95%, and the remaining 5% are Christian and Muslim.

Education System in Lao PDR • Kindergarten 1-3 years (aged 3-5) • Primary School 5 years (aged 5-10) compulsory • Lower Secondary 4 years (aged 10-14) • Upper Secondary 3 years (aged 14-16) • National University 5 years (aged 16-23) • Others: Vocational College, Teacher Training, Technical college. • School types: Public and Private.

Secondary Education • Implement the five pillars of education • Reform the general education curriculum by increasing the number of years of schooling from 11 years (5+3+3) to 12 years (5+4+3) • Train pupils in basic knowledge and vocational techniques • Train, recruit and allocate teachers based on the proposed plan • Promote a desire to learn amongst girls, ethnic groups and children from the poorest families • Change learning assessment methodology, ( for the transition upper grade or level of education • Supply school textbooks especially to mountainous, rural and isolated
