Scientific activities in Thailand Gullaya Wattayakorn Aquatic Resources Research Institute, Chulalongkorn University Bangkok 10330, Thailand
On-going research activities: • TBT contamination and imposex of gastropods around Sichang Island, Thailand. • Dissolved/dispersed petroleum hydrocarbons in the Gulf of Thailand. • Decision support system for the management of coastal ecosystems
TBT contamination in coastal waters of the inner Gulf of Thailand • The occurrence of TBT is reported in the coastal waters of selected sites in the inner Gulf of Thailand. TBT concentrations were found to range from 2 - 39 ng/L and 3 - 30 ng/L for 2005 and 2006 sampling period, respectively. • Average percentage of MBT:DBT:TBT = 18:38:44
The majority of these measurements were generally below the proposed Thailand Coastal Water Quality Standard for TBT (10 ng/L). • High TBT concentrations were found at three shipping ports, Laem Chabang, Ao Udom and Sriracha in ChonburiProvince, suggesting that the major source of TBT contamination in the inner Gulf is from antifouling paints used on ocean-going commercial vessels, rather than small boats.
Dissolved/dispersed petroleum hydrocarbons in the Gulf of Thailand. • Petroleum exploration has been increased in the Gulf of Thailand during the past decade • Contamination of oil/petroleum in terms of DDPH will be carried out in the Gulf during the next 2 years
Decision support system for the management of coastal ecosystems • Focus on information management and capacity building
