  2. Current Street Lighting Systems • Manual switching: This is the traditional and omnipresent technique. Human attendant is there to switch on and off the light according to the atmosphere. • Light dependent resistance (LDR): These are ambient based lights which can switch themselves ON and OFF. • Astronomical Timers: These devices choose the switch ON or switch OFF time depending on the date on the calendar. These have drawback as they are inefficient for variable light conditions.

  3. Why Smart Lighting • The up gradation from classic or traditional street lighting to a smart street lighting systemis primarily achieved by the ability of the devices to and communicate with each other. • The major components of the traditional street lighting can be linked with the help of communication network which also helps the operator to control and monitor the lights in complete locality.

  4. Basic Units of Smart Street Lighting The basic units of the street lighting system consists of: • Central Monitoring Station (CMS): CMS is used to observe the connected streetlights. • Data Concentrator Unit (DCU): DCU is used for communication with CMS through Cellular network and it is installed one unit per street. • Lamp Control Unit (LCU): LCU is placed on each and every single streetlight.

  5. Benefits of Smart Street Lighting • Instant access to control the light timings and can be remotely switch ON or OFF. • Different parameters like pollution level, ambient light level etc. can be controlled for high output. • Easy to detect and report faults for instant maintenance. • Sensor based switch ON & OFF by identifying the presence of any vehicle or person. • Easy to detect consumed power and power pilferage.

  6. Benefits To Community • More developed cities with greener and cleaner environment. • Lower Maintenance cost thus saves money for the community. • Increased High Output Light by reducing number of accidents etc.
