  11. Percent Matches by Choice and Applicant 2019

  12. Take Home Points • Primary Care increased positions by >1000 • A board failure complicates matters • Some specialties are becoming more competitive, like EM • Orthopedics is a long shot, even with a Step 1 score of 270 • OB/GYN won’t match a poor fit, even with competitive scores • Be realistic, but optimistic!

  13. USMLE Step Scores of Matched Applicantsby preferred Specialty and Applicant Type NRMP: http://www.nrmp.org/data/index.html: Charting Outcome 2016

  14. Concerns… More U.S. medical students in the pipeline : new schools mean more graduates Good U.S. medical students going unmatched More DO students in the pipeline (NRMP has merged the DO and MD processes) Some new spots: primary care on the rise Advice: Apply Smart!

  15. Check Point! Review Match 302: Today’s Trends Talk about the MSPE Talk about Letters of Recommendation Electronic application (ERAS) Let’s talk “Mechanics” (the NRMP)

  16. Medical Student Performance Evaluation (MSPE)

  17. The MSPE… • The MSPE is a comprehensive assessment regarding comparative performance. • Sequential description of performance, as compared to peers, through all years of school • An assessment of both academic performance and professional attributes. • It should be 2-3 pages in length and appropriately formatted with appendices.

  18. MSPE Format

  19. MSPE

  20. MSPE • Academic History

  21. MSPE • Academic Progress – Includes Professionalism • Preclinical Coursework – PCM comments • Clerkships – Basis of Overall Grade • Example (Clinical:33%, Exam 33%, OSCE 34%) • Brief synopsis of performance • Chart – Comparative performance

  22. The MSPE… • Format • Identifying Information • Identifies you as a fourth year medical student at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center • AOA distinction automatically included if applicable • Personal Comments / Noteworthy Achievements • 3 main points about you • You help write them

  23. The MSPE… • Format • Academic History • graduation and matriculation dates • breaks, gaps, LOA • transfer school and dual degreed program information, if applicable • explanation of remediated coursework • explanation of adverse actions

  24. The MSPE… • Format • Summary • summative assessment of comparative performance relative to peers (i.e. quartile) • Information on how the quartiles are determined (GPA) • Step scores and research aren’t included

  25. MSPE Summary

  26. The MSPE… • Is neither a letter of recommendation nor a prediction of future performance in residency

  27. Questions about the MSPE?

  28. Check Point! Review Match 302: Today’s Trends Talk about the MSPE Talk about Letters of Recommendation Electronic application (ERAS) Let’s talk “Mechanics” (the NRMP)

  29. Letters of Recommendations (LOR) Coversheet generated when you create your letter writer in ERAS. Beginning 2016, ALL LORs must be directly uploaded to ERAS by the author using LORP!

  30. Letters of Recommendation • Generally 3-4 are required (includes Chair) • recommend you get 4 (extra, visiting electives, research) • may transmit up to 4 per program • department chair of chosen specialty (if required) • senior faculty member usually in specialty of choice (i.e., faculty with whom you did JI) • other faculty member(s), not necessarily in specialty, who knows you well • Non-faculty members (e.g., research) as 4th letter • Remember, MSPE not a letter of recommendation!

  31. Letters of Recommendation • schedule appointment EARLY to review your professional goals and answer questions • LOR appointments schedule through faculty member’s office , not Student Affairs • provide a CV, personal statement, transcript, and ERAS LOR Form • don’t be shy about discussing your strengths or extenuating circumstances

  32. Chair’s letter etiquette • Call to set up an appointment - do not email • The chair is expecting you - even if you have never met • The interview as well as your performance on the rotation will be enough for him to write you a letter • Bring a list of programs you are considering; ask for feedback. • Ask about your competitiveness for programs and listen to the feedback

  33. Questions about LORs?
