  5. Marriage and Scripture • Present from the beginning (Adam & Eve) • Original communion of man & woman broken in the Fall • Marriage was a sign of God’s covenant with Israel. • Wedding feast at Cana – Christ’s presence blesses marriage.

Rite of Marriage • Marriage is a public vocation • An act of worship • In church before priest (deacon) reminds couple of the ecclesial and communal reality of marriage. • Ministers of the Sacrament • the bride & groom • Essential element – consent • Must be no constraints (coercion, pressure) • Must be free according to natural & church law

Marriage • Annulment • Investigate the couple at the time of the wedding • True Sacramental marriage bond never existed. • Free to Marry or enter religious life • Divorce • Civil reality that does not end the covenant of marriage • Divorced and remarried Catholics are still members of the Church, but cannot receive Sacraments. • Separation

Requirements of Marriage • Unity • Unbreakable and exclusive • Adultery and polygamy go against this unity • Indissolubility • Cannot be dissolved • Divorce goes against this indissolubility • Openness to children • Parents should decide the number and spacing of their children • Contraceptives go against this openness

  13. Grace of Matrimony • Brings the couples love to its fullness and strengthens their bond. • Share in the unconditional love of God with each other. • Live the Paschal Mystery – dying and rising.

  14. Domestic Church • Marriage is the foundation of the family, which is the backbone of the Church. • Family is where children first experience the love of God. • Parents are the primary teachers of the faith. • Primarily through their example.

  15. Natural Family Planning • Observing the natural fertility cycle of a woman to delay or achieve pregnancy. • Advantages: • No chemicals, effective, promotes communication, focus on loving over using spouse, brings God into decisions of life and love, intercourse is a renewal of the marriage covenant.
