1918-1938 • Nelson Mandela’s early life period • A typical village for poor people • Spoke the Xhosa language • People named after things in life (Nelson’s original name, Rohilalah, meant troublemaker) • Sometimes renamed at work or school • Apartheid not much in use • Very rare for black kids to go to school (such as Nelson) • Jobs: Tribe Chief, farmers, and merchants • Entertainment: tribal dances, songs • Mostly no education (except for very few kids)
1939-1999 • Nelson Mandela’s main time of service • Prejudice almost everywhere • Black people had worse jobs, and were poor paying • Many headed to Johannesburg for a better life • Many arranged marriages • Blacks always got the worst part of everything • Peaceful protests • Blacks eventually got their rights • Democracy established
