  3. Alvarez de Pineda • Looking for a water route to Pacific Ocean • Sailed along Gulf Coast- 1519 • Mapped the Texas Coast • 1st Spanish Explorer to see Mississippi River

  4. Panfilo de Narvaez • Landed in Florida • Divided up, 300 men explored on land, other sailed back to Cuba. • Sickness/Hunger occurred • Made rafts, landed in Galveston in NOV 6, 1528

  5. Cabeza de Vaca 1528 • Survivor of Narvaez Expedition • Left for dead • Possibly lived with Karankawa • Traded with Indians • Enslaved by Coahuiltecans 2nd harvest • Escaped in 1534 • Earned a reputation as a Shaman when he removed an arrowhead from an Indians chest, and stitched up the wound. • Wrote a book called Relacion, describing land, people, and animals.

  6. Marcos de Niza and Estevanico • Searching for 7 Cities of Cibola - 1538 • De Niza (priest) led group • Estevanico (traveled with de Vaca) • Estevanico thinks he sees 7 cities of gold. • Estavanico is killed by Zuni Indians • De Niza gets scared, returns home telling tales of cities of Gold and Silver.

  7. Francisco Coronado • sent by Spain to find and conquer Cibola • 1540 – found pueblo where Estevanico was killed • Found no gold or silver in Cibola • Heard tales of Quivira (wealthy city) • Traveled all over southwest 1st to see Grand Canyon • Finds Quivira in Kansas, nothing but golden grass huts • Returns to Mexico City in 1542 • Tells Spain land North of Mexico has very little wealth • Spain becomes less interested in sending more explorers

  8. Hernando de Soto/Moscoso • Explored southeast US • Started in Florida 1539 • First to cross the Mississippi • De Soto died, Moscoso takes over • Ran into Caddos,Tayshas-->Tejas • Sailed back to Mexico • Found Petroleum but saw no value

  9. Rene Robert CavelierSieur de La Salle • French - 1685 • ( water route to Pacific Ocean/Asia) Looking for Northwest Passage • Claimed the Mississippi River for France • Named Louisiana after King Louis XIV • Came back to build fort at the Mouth of Mississippi.

  10. La Salle continued… • Left France 1684 • Reached Gulf of Mexico but sailed past Mississippi • Landed in Matagorda Bay • Shipwrecked La Belle • Built Ft. St Louis (sickness) • Settlers attacked by Karankawa • Mutiny occurs. • Spain learns of Ft. and realizes it must protect area from other countries.
