  1. eHealth capability in clinical health professions Glynda SummersMHA, MPub Pol. BA, Dip Admin (Nsg)FRCNA, FCN (NSW)

  2. In 2009, J Forster and J Bryce identified in the Australian Nursing Informatics Competency Project: • Beginning practice nurses require basic computer skills and competencies in nursing informatics. - What do we mean by this? - Does this mean ability to use a mouse, able to navigate the web, a degree of keyboard skills, using technological equipment? • In this day and age of technology – mobile phone, internet banking, etc. How do these skills contribute to what is required in a clinical setting?

  3. Areas of health informatics Source: J Murphy et al.,2002 UK research

  4. How can we improve the level of health informatics skills in health care professions? • Develop minimum standards and skills for health informatics curriculum. • Refocus on health information and not IT skills. • Policy and culture of health information promoted both in clinical schools and health facilities – clear responsibilities for health informatics education. • Identify champions within clinical schools and health facilities. • Need for leadership by senior managers.

  5. How can we improve the level of health informatics skills in health care professions? (Cont'd) • Clinical educators and clinical facilitators require these skills in order to be able to impart the knowledge. • Need dedicated roles within facilities to promote health informatics and support clinicians. • Encourage research with implementation of clinical systems to further inform curriculum and skills requirements. • Whatever we do must have practical application in clinical settings.
