Mission GirlStrength’s mission is to demystify fear and empower girls to be strong and confident.
Logistics • The program is nine weeks in length and is designed for girls 10-14 years of age. • GirlStrength now offers a four-week program for high schools, and a modified version of the nine- week program for girls in grades 4-5. • GirlStrength is free and available to any school or organization located in the city of Portland. • Classes are co-taught by two trained instructors. • All GirlStrength instructors must complete 128 hours of training and pass a Portland Police Bureau background check.
Topics Covered • The importance of trusting one’s intuition • Physical and non-physical escape options • Verbal assertiveness skills and techniques • Personal boundary setting and identifying boundary intrusions • The role of confidence and self-love in self-defense • Examining societal values and gender stereotypes • Safety planning and prevention techniques • Building allies and dealing with relational aggression • Understanding and using street smarts • Understanding common attacker strategies • Sexual assault and dating violence awareness and prevention • Digital violence and cyber bullying awareness and prevention • Physical self-defense skills and when to use them • Gang involvement awareness and prevention • Human trafficking awareness and prevention
GirlStrength Workshops • GirlStrength also offers 90 minute to 3 hour personal safety workshops. • Workshops cover non-physical and physical skills and are designed to meet the specific needs of an organization or community.
How to Request the Program Simply visit the GirlStrength website & download a request form: http://www.portlandonline.com/police/index.cfm?c=49818&a=234218 Please note, requests are generally taken six months in advance. We are now accepting requests for the fall of 2012.
