RODIN (UTARTU’s node) Jaan Aarik, Harry Alles, Tauno Kahro,Jekaterina Kozlova, Valter Kiisk, Ahti Niilisk, Mihkel Rähn Kick-off meeting, 22.-23.09.2010, Hindås, Sweden
Current ongoing projects on graphene (Institute of Physics,University of Tartu) • National research project “Manufacturing, processing and characterization of graphene-based nanostructures” (5-years-program, positive decision made in August, 2009; PI: Dr. Harry Alles); currently we are building up a CVD system for graphene growth • Eurocores/Eurographene project “Entangled spin pairs in graphene” (3-years-program, started from June 1st, 2010; PI: Prof. Jaan Aarik); currently we are experimenting with covering graphene with ultra thin and smooth Al2O3 layers using Atomic Layer Deposition technique
RODIN/WP2: Graphene fabrication and characterization T2.1 Mechanical exfoliation • will prepare graphene samples onto different substrates using the mechanical exfoliation and characterize them by AFM and Raman T2.2 CVD and chemical exfoliation • will compare EBE, magnetic sputtering and ALD techniques in order to develop methods for preparation of flat substrates of Cu for the use in CVD of graphene
RODIN/WP6: Dissemination, technology transfer and other • will administer project webpage • will disseminate the knowledge, commercial assessment and technology transfer • will report on awareness and wider societal implications • contribute to the development of the CVD process for deposition of uniform carbon layers on the substrates and Raman characterization of graphene samples
RODIN/WP2: Graphene fabrication and characterization • T2.3 Fabrication and characterization of annealed DLC films for benchmark resonators • will search for methods to improve the smoothness of different metal films to control more accurately the carbon layer thickness • will (together with AALTO and UCAM-DENG) carry out the annealing of DLC samples • characterize the annealed samples with AFM and Raman spectroscopy
Existing equipment: Renishaw inVia micro-Raman spectrometer - Existing laser: air-cooled Ar+ laser MODU-LASER LLC (USA); (already twice in repaiment during two years of operation) • To be replaced with: water-cooled Ar+ laser from Spectra Physics Model 2017- • 364 nm,1W, 3W, 3W, power in 457, 488 and 514 nm lines; + 50 mW in 363.8 nm • UV line (to be bought with the funds of RODIN)
Existing equipment: FIB/SEM, Helios NanoLab 600 (installed in 2009)
Plans within RODIN’s project • characterization of annealed DLC films (later also annealing of them) • search for the best method to prepare smooth (and thin) copper substrates • for the CVD growth of graphene • experimenting with transfer of graphene films from the copper substrates • (after CVD process) to other substrates • set up the webpage of the project
