The National House, earlier called the Meeting House, is located on Charles Square. • The National House was built in 1871 and it became the centre of Czech patriotic movement. • Apart from cultural purposes, the building also served as a shop and it was a place for financial services. • The project of the National House was made by Karel Tebich and the construction was realized by a builder Herzán.
The National House was solemnly opened on 2nd October 1871. • The first floor served as a tavern and a library. On the ground floor there was a ready-to-wear factory. • The most important part of the National House was a big hall. • Balls, theater performances, meetings and lectures were held there.
The First Citizen Thrift in Třebíč opened its establishment in 1891. • A part of the building served as a bank till 1948. Agrobank opened its branch in the 1990s. • Later it was replaced by GE Money Bank that resided on the ground floor till 2008.
For temporary time it served for military servise purpose: during the WW I there used to be a military hospital, during the general strike in 1920 the army was accommodated there, from 1945 to 1946 judicial proceedings were held there. • From 1959 the National House was called the House of Enlightenment of Bedřich Václavek.
