J.D. Salinger Born Jerome David Salinger on January 1st, 1919 in Manhattan, NY. His longest stint in higher education was at Colombia in 1939. In 1944 he was drafted and landed at Utah base. Salinger was considered a recluse and very private man. Married twice, once in1955 and again in the 80s. Literature Time Line: 1941 – Salinger cracked The New Yorker with “Slight Rebellion Off Madison,” an early sketch of what became a scene in “The Catcher in the Rye” 1946 – The story was held of 5 years for fear of encouraging students to drop out of school. 1951 – Published “The Catcher in the Rye” 1961 -- Dedicated “Franny and Zoey” to William Shawn, whom Salinger considered one of his only friends.
