  1. Ch. 2-4 Solving Equations by Adding or Subtracting September 17th, 2013

  2. Definitions • Solution of an Equation - Is a value for a variable that makes an equation true. You can substitute a number for a value to determine whether the number is a solution of the equation.

  3. Examples • Determine if the given value of the variable is a solution to the equation… • For x = 66 Yes, x = 66 is a solution.

  4. Examples • With your neighbor determine if the following are also solutions… • For x = 20 • For x = 0 • NO! CAN’T DIVIDE BY 0!!!

  5. Solving Equations • When we solve an equation for a variable we want to undo everything in the equation to get only the variable left on one side. • In order to do this, we need to modify BOTH sides of the equation. What you do to one side of the equal sign, you must do to the other!!!

  6. Undo? • To undo something, think to yourself, “what is the opposite of that?” • If the equation is adding 5, what is the opposite of adding 5? • What is the opposite of dividing by 4? • Finish the sentence… • What you do to one side of an equation _________?

  7. Solve! • Solve x + 6 = 4. • Note: Our goal is to get “x” alone on one side of the equal sign. • What is happening on the side with the variable and how can we “undo” it? • Because the problem is adding 6 on the side with the variable, we need to subtract BOTH sides by 6 because that is the opposite.

  8. You Try! • Solve x + 8 = 3. • Solve c + (- 4) = - 5. • Solve b – 12 = - 49.

  9. Checking your solution • The best part of solving equations is that you can check to see if your answer is correct or not. How??? • Hint: Look back at the beginning of the notes. • Here’ how we check our solution… The last example b – 12 = - 49, we found b = - 37 as a solution.
