Ch. 2-4 Solving Equations by Adding or Subtracting September 17th, 2013
Definitions • Solution of an Equation - Is a value for a variable that makes an equation true. You can substitute a number for a value to determine whether the number is a solution of the equation.
Examples • Determine if the given value of the variable is a solution to the equation… • For x = 66 Yes, x = 66 is a solution.
Examples • With your neighbor determine if the following are also solutions… • For x = 20 • For x = 0 • NO! CAN’T DIVIDE BY 0!!!
Solving Equations • When we solve an equation for a variable we want to undo everything in the equation to get only the variable left on one side. • In order to do this, we need to modify BOTH sides of the equation. What you do to one side of the equal sign, you must do to the other!!!
Undo? • To undo something, think to yourself, “what is the opposite of that?” • If the equation is adding 5, what is the opposite of adding 5? • What is the opposite of dividing by 4? • Finish the sentence… • What you do to one side of an equation _________?
Solve! • Solve x + 6 = 4. • Note: Our goal is to get “x” alone on one side of the equal sign. • What is happening on the side with the variable and how can we “undo” it? • Because the problem is adding 6 on the side with the variable, we need to subtract BOTH sides by 6 because that is the opposite.
You Try! • Solve x + 8 = 3. • Solve c + (- 4) = - 5. • Solve b – 12 = - 49.
Checking your solution • The best part of solving equations is that you can check to see if your answer is correct or not. How??? • Hint: Look back at the beginning of the notes. • Here’ how we check our solution… The last example b – 12 = - 49, we found b = - 37 as a solution.
