Quench limit investigation C.Bracco, A.Nordt, M.Bednarek, R.Schmidt, M.Solfaroli
Motivation C.Bracco
First MD quench investigation TCP H and V for (beam 2) in P7 closed (-2 mm offset, 1 mm gap) to stop the beam BLM not masked -> PM active Many steps performed varying the intensity (1,2,3 E10) and the TCLIB positions (from nominal settings till 1.3 σ gap and -3 σ offset) Signal acquired with a special instrumentation still installed. An additional monitoring equipment will be installed in case of a stop before the MD No quench nor quenchino appeared QPS signal spiked up to ~130 mV (threshold is at 100 mV) There is no clear difference on BLM signal once -1 σ offset is in place
Proposal (method 1) • With the same configuration as last time: • TCPs for B2 closed in P7 • TCLIB at 1.3 σ gap and -3 σ offset (with eventually a tilt) • Nominal emittance Injection of beam 2 with 3E10 (then possibly 5E10) intensity for different current level. The loss signals in the nearby regions should be monitored as the magnet current is increased, and in case the losses increase to much, it may be considered reducing the intensity. As the optic is anyway not at injection, the two converters of RQ6.L8 can be driven at exactly the same current. According to the results and the possible occurrence of a quench some of the steps might not be executed. 2300 A cannot be exceeded, being the commissioned current for the circuit!
Proposal (method 2) A bump was created with a circulating pilot, the beam was lost at 20 mm • Beam injected with a bump: • 23 mm, BLM at Q6: 1000% above dump thresholds • 21 mm, BLM at Q6: 270% above dump thresholds • 25 mm, BLM at Q6: 900% above dump thresholds • Nothing seen by the QPS!! We’ll possibly use again this method to throw the beam directly into the magnet
