  2. Accept: to take or receive something offered. • Ex: I accept your invitation to join you at the dinner. • Except: with the exclusion of … • Ex: Everyone was invited except for me.

  3. Lose: to come to be without, through accident, theft, etc., so that there is little or no prospect of recovery. • Ex: Don’t lose your homework! • Loose: to not fit tightly. • Ex: My shirt is loose.

  4. Principle: • an accepted or professed rule of action or conduct: • Ex: a person of good moral principles. • a fundamental, primary, or general law or truth from which others are derived. • Ex: the principles of modern physics. • Principal: first or highest in rank, importance, value, etc.; chief; foremost. • Ex: The principal has the most authority at a school.

  5. Through: in at one end, side, or surface and out at the other Ex: I went through the tunnel. • Threw: Past tense of throw. • Ex: I threw the ball to the teacher.

  6. Affect: to act on; produce an effect or change in: • Ex: Cold weather affected the crops. • Affect is a VERB! • Effect: something that is produced by an agency or cause; result; consequence • Ex: Exposure to the sun had the effect of toughening his skin. • Effect is a NOUN!

  7. Capitol- a building occupied by a state legislature. • Ex: The capitol building for Tennessee is in Nashville. • Capital- the city or town that is the official seat of government in a country, state, etc • Ex: The capital of Illinois is Springfield. • Ex: Every sentence starts with a capital letter.

  8. Stationary- immovable or not moving. • Ex: The statue is stationary. • Ex: The bike is stationary at the moment. • Stationery- writing materials, as pens, pencils, paper, and envelopes. • Ex: My mom gave me pretty stationery for my wedding invitations.

  9. Allusion- a reference to a person, place, or famous literary work. • Ex: The song alluded to Romeo and Juliet. • REAL • Illusion- something that deceives by producing a false or misleading impression of reality. • Ex: The waterfall was actually an illusion. • NOT REAL

  10. Compliment: words of praise or affirmation. • Ex: Sarah complimented my shirt today. • Complement: things that go together or complete one another. • Ex: Salt and pepper complement each other.

  11. Cite: having to do with research credit. • Ex: You must always cite your sources. • Sight: an act, fact, or instance of seeing. Ex: That man must be arrested on sight! • Site: the position or location of a town, building, etc., esp. as to its environment • Ex: This was the site of the Trojan War.

  12. Counsel- advice; opinion or instruction given in directing the judgment or conduct of another. • Ex: My parents had to go see a marriage counselor. • Council-an assembly of persons summoned or convened for consultation, deliberation, or advice. • Ex: Student Council meets once a week.

  13. Coarse- rough to the touch. Or describing someone that’s “rough around the edges” • Ex: The horse’s mane was coarse. • Ex: He is a very coarse man. • Course: a direction or route taken or to be taken. • Ex: In high school one must take certain courses. • Ex: Of course I will go to the party. (idiom).

  14. Their – of or referring to a person. • Ex: The cat is theirs. • Ex: Their house is very large. • There- refers to a place. • Ex: Your socks are over there. • Ex: There is my hair brush!
