Summary Aim: To understand how learning and memory works Research Approach: Reductionist Eric Kandel studied the explicit memory storage(ability to remember places, objects, and people) in mice Studied the implicit memory of sea snails (Aplysia)
Summary (con’t) Conclusion: Short-term memory can evolve into long-term memory with sensitization, which is a learning process where a participant is repeatedly introduced to the same stimulus, which increase the response of the participant. The study also revealed that memory storage and retrieval is carried out through top-down processing.
How does this relate to localization of function of the brain? Long term and short term memory appear at the same locus in the brain. The more a person is sensitized to stimuli, the larger the neural connections made by the brain.
The localization of the function in the brain: Long-term and short- term memory appear at the same locus in the brain, which is the Hippocampus. He found that the more a person is sensitized to stimuli, the larger the neural connections made by the brain.
What is the Hippocampus? The Hippocampus is involved in gathering, forming and storing memory. Other functions of the Hippocampus are Emotional responses, being a “Cognitive map.” Damage to the Hippocampus does not affect different types of memory, such as motor and cognitive skills. Over different course studies, scientists have concluded that losing memory is dependent on where the region of the function is located.
