Primeros Pasos – InterAmerican Health Alliance • Primeros Pasos/ IAHA is a NGO founded by VU medical student Brent Savoie • Offers preventative pediatric care to over 1000 patients/ month outside of Quetzaltenango • InterAmerican Health Alliance is housed at Vanderbilt • Alternative Spring Break site since 2005 • Approved clinical rotation for VU medical students

13. Midwifery/ School of Nursing • CLAS and Vanderbilt School of Nursing offer an optional one semester add-on to the midwifery program • Vanderbilt midwife nurses work with midwives and Primeros Pasos medical clinic to support women’s health initiatives

14. Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital – Shalom Foundation alliance • ≈ 2 surgical missions per year to Guatemala • Rotations for pediatric interns at Manos de Amor health & dental clinic • The Moore Center for Children’s Health will open in 2010 in Zone 1 of Guatemala City

VISAGE Guatemala Course • Vanderbilt Initiative for Scholarship and Global Engagement • Innovative program that combines service-learning and summer study abroad • Medicine, Health & Society course “Health, Development, and Culture in Guatemala” offered 2010 • Vanderbilt undergraduate students will study the history, culture, and political economy of Guatemala in Spring semester • Students apply this knowledge during four weeks of fieldwork in the Primeros Pasos clinic in May and June
