  1. Giving up our Isaac(Genesis 22:1-14; Matthew 10:40-42)

  2. The World philosophy vs. Jesus’ teaching • The world philosophy: satisfying your desires, taking care of your own profits, and winning your competitions. • Jesus’ teaching: we must stop living for ourselves and live for others if we really want to be his followers: “Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another's feet” (Jn. 13:14). • Throughout this symbolic lesson, Jesus taught us that it is in this giving life to others that we can make a meaningful life.

  3. Abraham’s trial • "Take your son, your only son, Isaac, whom you love, and go to the region of Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains I will tell you about.“ (v. 22). • Abraham obeyed God’s command that didn’t make sense to God’s promise to him at all. • Throughout his long relationship with God, Abraham discovered what was most precious to God was his total trust in God.

  4. Finding God’s ram in a thicket • "Do not lay a hand on the boy," he said. "Do not do anything to him. Now I know that you fear God, because you have not withheld from me your son, your only son.“ Abraham looked up and there in a thicket he saw a ram caught by its horns. He went over and took the ram and sacrificed it as a burnt offering instead of his son.” (vv. 12-13). • Before we find a ram or in order to find it, we should be prepared to sacrifice our own Isaac, our interest, our pleasure, our cleverness, and our gifts. • Giving up is really hard but we can do it if we dare to trust in God and trust that God will indeed provide for us.

  5. What can we give… • If we really love God, we will be more concerned about how to follow God’s will and how to bring and show God’s love to our neighbors. • Jesus Christ’s new commandment is “Love your God and love your neighbors.” • When we love others and serve others and live for others, we can manifest the image of God.
