  2. “Q”: Question • Ask, “What is the direction word in the test question? • Identify and bracket [ ] the direction word • Three direction words often used in essays: • Discuss, describe, explain • Example: [Describe] the role of George Washington as the president of the US.

  3. “Q”: Question • More direction words: • List -Criticize • Trace -Evaluate • Relate -Summarize • Diagram -Compare

  4. “U”: Underline • After bracketing the direction word, underline the words that help you focus on the ideas to develop your answer. • Example: • The Great Depression was the worst economic period in American history. [Explain] why the Great Depression happened when it did.

  5. “O”: Organize/Write • Look at or write the words you underlined in the essay test item. • Write the facts that are related to the words you underlined. • Organize the facts by creating a graphic organizer. • Using the graphic organizer as a guide, write your answer.

  6. “O”: Organize/Write • To write a one-paragraph answer: • Begin with an intro sentence that contains your MAIN POINT • Follow this sentence with sentences that SUPPORT your main point • End your answer with a sentence that states your CONCLUSION

  7. “O”: Organize/Write • Answers that require more than one paragraph: • Begin with an into paragraph that contains your MAIN POINT • Follow with additional paragraphs, each of which has SUPPORTING POINTS • End with a paragraph in which you state your CONCLUSION

  8. “T”: Time • You should decide how much time to spend answering each item. • To do that: • Determine the total time you have to complete the test. • Consider how many points each item is worth. Plan to use more time for the items that count for the most points

  9. “T”: Time • Continued… • Write in front of each item the amount of time you plan to use answering the item. • Make sure that the time you plan for answering all items is not greater than the total time you have to take the test. • If the time you planned is greater than the time you have, revise your plan.

  10. “T”: Time • Practice: • You have to take an essay test that has 4 items. • The test counts for 100 points, one item is 40 points, the other three are worth 20 points each. • You have 60 minutes to take the test.

  13. “E”: Evaluate • Evaluate the essay test answer your wrote by thinking about the following items: • Content: • Did you answer all the parts of the question? • Did you include all relevant facts? • Are all your facts accurate? • Writing: • Does my answer begin with an introduction? • Does my answer have supporting points? • Does my answer end with a conclusion?

  14. “E”: Evaluate • Mechanics • Is my handwriting legible? • Did I spell all the words correctly? • Did I use correct punctuation? • Did I use correct grammar? • If you need to, correct any of these items to get the best grade possible.
