Exploratory Synthesis of Silver Iron(III) VanadatesShiou-Jyh Hwu, Clemson University, DMR 0706426 • The structural features and electrochemical properties of a new series of silver iron(III) vanadates relevant to applications as cathode materials for primary lithium battery devices have been studied. • Silver vanadium oxide, Ag2V4O11 (SVO), has been known for its superior electrochemical properties in a primary lithium battery configuration and has been used extensively in implantable medical devices. The theoretical capacity of SVO is 315 mAh/g, however < 15% (47 mAh/g) is above the 3 V corresponding to Ag+/Ag0. • New phases discovered in the pseudo-ternary, Ag2OFe2O3V2O5, system show extended capacities because of the combined reduction of Ag+/Ag0 and Fe3+/Fe2+.
