  3. Plot (definition) • Plot is the organized pattern or sequence of events that make up a story. Every plot is made up of a series of incidents that are related to one another.

  4. 1. Exposition • This usually occurs at the beginning of a short story. Here the characters are introduced. We also learn about the setting of the story. Most importantly, we are introduced to the main conflict (main problem).

  5. 2. Inciting Incident/Initial Incident The inciting incident is the point where the conflict is introduced.

  6. A brief intermission to discuss CONFLICT. • A conflict is a struggle. • There are two categories of conflict. • External conflict affects the character from the outside. Person vs. Person • If the conflict is with more than one person or a whole group, it is called PERSON vs. SOCIETY

  7. A second type of external conflict is called PERSON VS. NATURE. • Sometimes a person tries to escape his destiny. This is called PERSON vs. FATE. • Sometimes the external conflict is PERSON vs. MACHINE Person vs. Nature

  8. INTERNAL CONFLICT is a struggle inside a person. • Maybe it’s about a decision, a crime, a family problem. Person Vs. Self

  9. 3. Rising Action • This part of the story begins to develop the conflict(s). A building of interest or suspense occurs.

  10. 4. Climax • This is the turning point of the story. Usually the main character comes face to face with a conflict. The main character will change in some way.

  11. 5. Falling Action • All loose ends of the plot are tied up. The conflict(s) and climax are taken care of.

  12. 6. Resolution • The story comes to a reasonable ending.
