THE POTENTIAL LINK BETWEEN LAKE PRODUCTIVITY AND AN INVASIVE ZOOPLANKTON IN OWASCO LAKE Melissa Balk and Meghan Brown Hobart and William Smith Colleges
Outline • The fishhook waterflea (Cercopagis) • Trophic interactions • Our work in Owasco Lake • Potential control of productivity by Cercopagis
Cercopagispengoi (fish hook water flea)
1cm Cercopagis pengoi • Introduced to 5 Finger Lakes • Long caudal spine • Carnivorous predator • Winter dormancy Caudal spine Diapausing eggs Photos by M. Brown
Trophic Interactions Sport fish Forage fish Cercopagis Carnivorous Zooplankton Herbivorous Zooplankton Leptodora Algae (Phytoplankton) http://www.glerl.noaa.gov/seagrant/GLWL/Zooplankton/Cladocera/CladoceraKeySizeTable.html Nutrients (N and P)
Our Goals on Owasco Lake • Document summer density dynamics of C.pengoi and native invertebrate predators 2)Investigate correlations between C. pengoi and the abiotic environment 3) Examine the relationships among C. pengoi, herbivorous plankton, and algal productivity
Research Methods Plankton samples were collected by towing nets vertically All samples were jarred and preserved in 70% EtOH
Goal 1: Document summer density dynamics of C.pengoi and native invertebrate predators Mean density (SD) of invertebrate predators (ind./m3) Cercopagis Leptodora
Goal 2: Investigate correlations between C. pengoi and the abiotic environment • All water quality parameters were within the tolerance limits of both C.pengoi and Leptodora • C.pengoi become abundant when the water temperature reaches 17oC • Leptodora become abundant when the water temperature reaches 20oC
Goal 3:Examine the relationships among C. pengoi, herbivores, and algal productivity Station 2
Goal 3: Examine the relationships among C. pengoi, herbivores, and algal productivity Station 1
Similar trends in Lake Ontario Laxon et al. 2003
Conclusion Sport fish • Cercopagis may have an impact on the algal productivity in Owasco Lake. • Cercopagis eats herbivorous plankton, which releases algae from grazers… therefore, more Cercopagis may lead to more algae Forage fish Carnivorous Zooplankton Herbivorous Zooplankton Algae (Phytoplankton) http://www.glerl.noaa.gov/seagrant/GLWL/Zooplankton/Cladocera/CladoceraKeySizeTable.html Nutrients (N and P)
