  1. ANGLES School Santander What is ANGLES?

  2. ANGLES Astrophysical Network for Gravitational LEnsing Studies [Marie Curie Research Training Network] (Successor to CERES and to be funded by the EU)

  3. 4. ANGLES Science • CDM sub-structure in lensing galaxies • Lens radial mass profiles • Evolution of lensing galaxies • Microlensing to study compact objects in the dark haloes of galaxies. • N-body simulations of lensing galaxies to compare with observations. • Microlensing in our Galaxy and galactic dynamics • The Hubble constant from time delays, plus mass modelling • Propagation effects – scattering, free-free absorption, Faraday rotation/depolarization, absorption lines. • Develop an optical/IR spectrograph for VLT and explore techniques for future lens searches

  5. What do we get from the EU? • Seven 3-year studentships – 2 for JBO • Six 2-year postdocs • 4-years money for networking, organizing workshops and summer schools, etc. • Networking funds are for all the collaborating individuals, not just the students and postdocs paid by the Network.

  6. Status of ANGLES • Started April 1, 2004 and formally ends March 31, 2008. • We have been allocated 2.42€ million. • Have appointed 5 of the 7 students (tell your friends that there may be places going in Bonn and Heidelberg). • We are advertising for postdocs. Closing date December 15. • There will be 3 more schools and several workshops/network meetings

  7. Golden Rules • Do good science and enjoy it – the network is yours. • Never refuse an opportunity to buy a drink for the coordinator. • Acknowledge ANGLES on any paper you write.
