What is driving it? • The consumers love it • 77% of users of Wi-Fi-enabled mobile phones are completely or very satisfied with their device • a higher rate of satisfaction than that reported by users of mobile phones without Wi-Fi. • 74 percent of people who have Wi-Fi on their mobile phone use it • 77 percent say they will seek Wi-Fi in their next phone as well. • Users of phones with Wi-Fi say they like their phone twice as much as those who have phones without Wi-Fi. • The manufacturers like it • "The surprising thing in the survey is that Wi-Fi ends up being a growth driver for the smart phone," (Edgar Figueroa, WFA) Data based on ABI survey done in February 2009: 1,000 U.S. mobile phone users between the ages of 18 and 59. Sample error was + or - 3.08 percent. C Zhu, YS Kim / Samsung
What is driving it? • Even the carriers like it ! • Carriers tend to agree that Wi-Fi is complementary to other networks, including 3G and 4G cellular. • As flat rate data plans increase, wireless operators can leverage Wi-Fi capable handsets to • offload data intensive applications (act as an unlicensed femtocell), • reduce licensed spectrum usage, • improve in-building coverage, and • offer new services to new markets • entice new subscribers and reduce turnover (e.g. ATT and T-mobile) • “…it is clear that Wi-Fi offers a competitive advantage for both manufacturers and carriers. A growing number of carriers worldwide have included Wi-Fi phones in their offering, and all of the major handset makers now include the technology in their flagship products." • Michael Morgan, industry analyst, ABI Research C Zhu, YS Kim / Samsung

What is Important to Mobile Devices? • Power consumption • 11, 11e, 11n • Short latency of call setup • Call quality and continuity • 11e • Seamless handovers among different BSSs • 11k, 11r • Local Mobility (within an ESS) • 11k, 11r, 11s • Coverage (sometimes more important than throughput) • 11s, 11n • Simultaneous voice and mixed traffic capacity • 11e, 11n • Low control overhead for VoIP traffic
Power Consumption – The Biggest Issue • Solutions in 802.11 exist, but not without controversy • PSM may or may not save power and suffer from performance issues with power saving. • PSMP introduces big overhead and may not be efficient in some cases. • An enhanced approach may be needed, with the new metrics of 11ac. Power breakdown for a connected mobile device in idle mode. The wireless interfaces consume approximately 70% of the total power. Since the device is idle, the LCD and backlight are turned off – consuming zero power. Other includes power regulation and other smaller subsystems (such as LEDs) Source: T. Pering, Y. Agarwal, R. Gupta, R. Want, CoolSpots: Reducing the Power Consumption of Wireless Mobile Devices with Multiple Radio Interfaces, MobiSys'06, June 19–22, 2006, Uppsala, Sweden
Suggestions to Functional Requirements • Suggest the following requirement, which is similar to that of 802.16m (Section 6.11, Enhanced power saving, in 802.16m SRD) “IEEE 802.11ac shall provide support for enhanced power saving functionality to help reduce power consumption in mobile devices.”
Summary • Wi-Fi applications are getting diversified • While some requires high throughput • Others may impose additional requirements • Mobile device is a huge market for Wi-Fi and is growing rapidly • One day the number of mobile/portable Wi-Fi devices will exceed that of fixed Wi-Fi devices. • Suggested 11ac TG consider support for mobile/portable devices, especially the support of enhanced power saving mechanism, when working on functional requirements C Zhu, YS Kim / Samsung
