  1. Confidentiality What does it mean for you?

  2. What is Confidentiality? • The protection of private, identifying information. • If information is accorded a confidential status, that status mandates specific controls, including strict limitations on access and disclosure, so that unauthorized persons cannot access it.

  3. Confidentiality • These controls must be adhered to by those handling the information. • Confidentiality is an general concept that is designed to assure that information will be used responsibly. • It is an integral part of professional codes of ethics that regulate the disclosure of information obtained in the course of professional interactions.

  4. What is Identifiable Information? • Information, which makes it possible to identify an individual. • Not just confined to account transactions – it extends to all the information that the bank has about the customer • This may be direct information: • Name • Address • Social Security Number • Account Number • Indirect (information from which one can reasonably figure out the identity of an individual).

  5. You cannot! • Leaving paperwork exposed for others to see. • Discussing peoples accounts, balances, etc. • Discuss loan applications with others.

  6. The General Rule • No acknowledgement or disclosure of any confidential information to anyone, without authorization.

  7. What should you say? • I’m sorry, I can’t give you any information about anyone without an authorization from the person"

  8. Situation 1 • Brian comes into the bank and wants to know which students have accounts in the bank. • What do you do?

  9. Situation 2 • John came and got a loan at the bank for Christmas money. • You just heard Alex talking to another student about John getting the loan and the reason for it. • What should you do?

  10. Situation 3 • While you are in the bank your best friend comes in and wants to go behind the teller counter. • What do you do?
