  2. What do words mean? Denotative Meaning • The word’s literal definition • Think of it as what it would say in the dictionary. • Example: Car • How would we define it, literally? Connotative Meaning • What we associate with the word • What it means to me • Example: Car • VW bug • Freedom • Driver’s License • Going on a date • Accident • What else?

  3. Group poster project • Let’s do an example using the word “rose” • Now, as a group, choose one of these words and create your own poster. Include as many connotative meanings as you can! • Pool • Season • Tackle • Date • Crane • Channel • Automatic • Have one you want to do? Ask Mr. Thompson…

  4. What to do next… • Write a 1-5 on the bottom corner of your poster. A 1 means your group is confused. A 5 means that your group could teach a lesson about connotative meaning! • Post your poster on the wall • Spend some time looking at other groups’ posters • What connotative meanings surprised you? • What was missing that you would have added?
