CATIAv5 Euclid3 data migration
Euclid3 database (May 2005): 165000 CAD Objects including: 35000 official drawings (with 40000 associated 3D models) 6000 3D-Standards (Presently about 1000 new models are created every month) Introduction After the definitive shutdown of Euclid at CERN: • LHC designs will still need to be accessed… • and modified.
Euclid3 and CATIAv5 are completely different: Euclid is a faceted solid modeller, CATIA is an exact, parameterized solid modeller. Euclid precision varies between models and can be controlled, CATIA precision is fixed. A lot of CATIA Solid features are sketch based (no sketch in Euclid). Euclid data is directly stored in a database. Catia uses files. Particularly at CERN: Huge Euclid database files Very large assemblies & Complex drawings Heterogeneous designs: Various design methodologies fast turn-over of CAD designers on site + external partners wide scope of corporate knowledge Enormous variation in size and accuracy of geometrical models (from a few microns to hundred of meters) Euclid entities used for piping/cabling/tubing studies (no exact equivalent in CATIA) Many objects without Euclid history (imported from other software) Corrupted models Technical aspects
Exact solid with CSG information Faceted Model Conversion types Starting from a full Euclid 3D Solid Assembly…
Conversion tools / Softwares • MDTVISION Connectivity Modules: A Euclid3 to CATIAv5 connector that allows surfaces (Brep), solids (with or without CSG information) and drawing conversion. • DeltaConcept Workview: Provides Euclid3 to VRML or DXF conversion possibility. • CAD Standard exchange formats: STEP, IGES, DXF/DWG • Other tools: 3D Evolution, Trans3D, TTF, OpenCascade…
All components have been successfully converted: 60% Some Parts are missing due to assembly structure organisation conversionerrors: 8% No output file generated: 7% (conversion process aborted) 3D Conversion results • About 40% of converted models contain errors • Not all kind of error can be detected by programs • Models must be manually checked after conversion (human resources are needed). • In most cases the best solution is to correct in Euclid and convert again • Faceted models (for integration studies: not editable) • Using DeltaConcept WorkView, about 99% of models are converted successfully • Exact models (for mechanical studies: editable) • Results obtained mainly with the Euclid3 to CatiaV5 Connectivity Modules from MDTVision.
2D Conversion results • Drawings converted by the connector • A drawing converted by the connector is not always exactly the same as the original from Euclid. • Severe problems with the “cache” function. • Problems with the spline representation • Dimensions can change slightly! • Euclid3 to Catiav5 Connectivity Modules convert only the 2D geometry. • Original links with the 3D models are lost and the corresponding models are not converted • Internal development is needed to migrate separately the linked 3D models, and to trace the original links inside SmarTeam. • All archived CDD drawings will be kept in HPGL format: this is the only way to keep a safe copy of the drawing.
The CERN EUCLID3 databases cannot be transferred entirely, Only the following will be migrated: 3D-Standards ~8000 Official 3D-drawings (CDD non-obsolete drawings) and corresponding 3D models > 70000 Should be < 40000 after filtering by Design office (declare obsolete what is obsolete LEP/DFBS…) Check carefully and correct ONLY essential data (to be identified, checked and corrected by the design offices) 3D models used by ICL (LHC integration) (*) Other models or drawings manually selected by the Design Office (*) No list has been provided to the CSE-CAE section yet Conversion Policy
Suggested timetable • 2005-2006 • Migration tools preparation period. • Checking conversion quality (Design Offices) • 2007: • Migration production start. The relevant Euclid 2D-drawings and 3D-models are selected and migrated. General design use of Euclid is stopped at the end of 2007. • 2008-2010: • Tools will be kept active for a limited period after the main migration. • The CERN design offices will be responsible for converting manually (WebConsult) any additional data.
