The Role of a School Social Worker • The integral link between home, school, and community in providing services to students, families, and school personnel for tier 1 and 2 and tier 3 to remove barriers and maximize academic and social success • Delivers evidence-based education, behavior and mental health, and case management services comparable to wrap around services, to engage a student's social emotional adjustment to school and society • Provides innovative leadership, interdisciplinary collaboration, systems coordination (both within the school district and outside of the school district) and professional consultation, with specific focus on mental health and behavioral needs

WASSW Membership Meeting • OSPI Social Emotional Learning Workgroup • In the 2014 Supplemental Budget, ESSB 6052 Sec 501 (34) directed OSPI to convene a workgroup “to recommend comprehensive benchmarks for developmentally appropriate interpersonal and decision-making knowledge and skills of social and emotional learning for grades kindergarten through high school that build upon what is being done in early learning.” • The workgroup submitted its report with recommendations to the education committees of the legislature, and the office of the governor on October 1, 2016.
WASSW Membership Meeting • OSPI Social Emotional Learning Workgroup • http://www.k12.wa.us/Workgroups/SELB-Meetings/SELBWorkgroup2016Report.pdf • This report is the culmination of the work completed by the Social Emotional Learning Benchmarks Workgroup (SELB), containing background information, research, and recommendations regarding social emotional learning (SEL). Final recommendations consist of a statewide SEL Framework (guiding principles, standards, and benchmarks) for K-12 students, as well as actionable next steps to further develop SEL in Washington.
WASSW Membership Meeting • OSPI Strengthening Student Educational Outcomes • Behavior Menu of Best Practices and Strategies • Students throughout the state of Washington receive tutoring, extra classes, summer programs, and other interventions with the help of funds from the Learning Assistance Program (LAP). The state of Washington invests several hundred million dollars per year in LAP to help students struggling to meet grade level standards. About 13 percent of students statewide struggle to succeed in school and are served by LAP.
WASSW Membership Meeting • OSPI Strengthening Student Educational Outcomes • Behavior Menu of Best Practices and Strategies • In 2013, the Legislature passed a bill (ESSB 5946), requiring the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) to improve the LAP system and K–4 literacy outcomes. Now, OSPI annually convenes expert panels to identify best practices that can help students grow and succeed academically. WASSW Membership Meeting • SSWAA Delegate Assembly in Minneapolis, MN • Strategic Plan Activities for 2015-2018 • Create a PR Committee to update current brochures and promotional materials as well as developing new materials to disseminate • Educate the membership about legislation and initiatives that support the mission of SSWAA • Establish National Certification for School Social Workers by 2018. • Assist 3 of the 21 states without an organization in developing state School Social Work associations each calendar year.
