  1. AlphaServer Management Station Using AMS to manage the ES47/ES80/GS1280 AlphaServer platforms July 2005

  2. APW SPM AMU AMSMGR CMFD PCM Overview of the AMS

  3. AMS Overview The AMS software consists of tightly integrated software components that provide local and remote management for the ES47/ES80/GS1280 family of AlphaServers. From a single point of access you can monitor, configure partitions, access MBM and OS/SRM consoles of multiple AlphaServers.

  4. AMS Overview - continue The AMS functionality includes: • Configuration Management using intuitive graphical interfaces that can be accessed remotely over the corporate LAN using the WEB • Proactive management and predictive failure implemented at the platform hardware level and communicated to the user through AMS

  5. AMS Overview (cont’d) • Console based management accessed using telnet connections and console output logging • Authenticated access based on OS authentication • Authorized access to management tasks based on AMS specific authorization roles • Integration with OS management applications that provide access to OS management utilities running on the OS instances of the partitions.

  6. AMS Overview (cont’d) The AMS server software is currently supported on • Alpha systems running Tru64 Version 5.1B • Intel based PCs running RedHat Enterprise Linux Version 3.0 The AMS clients can be accessed remotely using any OS.

  7. AMS Main Components • The Server Platform Manager (SPM), a client-server web based application. The client is the AMS main user interface. • The AlphaServer Management Utility (AMU), a client-server web based application that manages the Marvel Platform by communicating directly with the Marvel SMLAN firmware. • The AlphaServer Partitioning Wizard (APW), a web-based wizard style utility that simplifies the configuration of partitions

  8. AMS Main Components (cont’d) • The Platform Console Manager (PCM), a character cell user interface that allows you to monitor and manage consoles over low bandwidth connections • The console Management Facility (CMF), a utility that manages connections to consoles and monitors and logs console output.

  9. SPM Main Features • Client is accessed remotely using a web browser • Can run as an application on local AMS server • Provides central point of control • Displays all platforms connected to the AMS and configured in SPM • Monitors the status of all platforms • Displays environmental errors

  10. SPM (cont’d) • Displays EVM events in real time • Launches AMU, APW and OS management applications • Provides telnet access to the MBM and OS/SRM consoles • Displays the logs of all consoles • Displays the event logs that contain events generated by CMF

  11. SPM (cont’d)

  12. AMU Main Features • Displays detailed, dynamic information about the configuration and status of platforms, system drawers, I/O drawers, CPU modules and partitions. • Displays SMLAN alerts • Displays all environmental readings, I/O and power connections. • Displays installed firmware versions and upgrades firmware.

  13. AMU (cont’d) • Displays hardware error logs. • Configures partitions. • Provides telnet access to a platform’s console ports.

  14. AMU (cont’d) AMU is OS independent and it can be installed and run stand-alone. AMU stand alone kits are available for Tru64, Linux and Windows installations.

  15. AMU (cont’d)

  16. APW Main Features • Based on Wildfire’s CAPM application • Creates new partitions or modifies existing ones. • Can validate partitions before committing. • Can save a partition configuration into a partition map file that can be used to restore or replicate partitions

  17. APW (cont’d)

  18. PCM Main Features • Displays a list of all consoles and their status. • Displays a real time list of the latest console output of all managed consoles. • Provides console access to each partition and MBM ports. • Provides access to console logs.

  19. PCM (cont’d)

  20. AMS Architecture

  21. The AMS in your IT environment

  22. Summary • The AMS applications provide a comprehensive management environment for managing the new ES47/ES80/GS1280. You can monitor and configure multiple platforms from a single point of access using web based or serial line/terminal access. • Installation and tutorial demonstration of the applications will be covered during the second day’s session.
