  1. Workshop #1 reportDigital repository management Ramon Ros rros@cbuc.es ELAG 2008 Wageningen

  2. Topics discussed • Preservation • Growth of repository (policies). • Software/infrastructure • Persistent URLs • Branding • Economic sustainibility of the repository

  3. Preservation 1/2 • Importance of new standard PDF/A, PDF/? • Separate operations: • “Production” -> repository • Long term preservation • Need to select stuff. “Everything” seems impossible. (ex: Facebook)

  4. Preservation 2/2 Group recommendations: • Gather metadata (and technical metadata). • Avoid “exotic” formats • Use open solutions • Someone have to think about it

  5. Growth of repository • You need to reach the critical mass, then everything goes smoothly. • Ideas: • Cream of Science in the Netherlands • Make it part of your internal workflow • Must be easy for the researcher • Small awards (economic or not)

  6. Software/infrastructure • Still some home made applications • Dspace used in 2 institutions • Fedora will be in use in other 2 institutions • It seems that some institutions could reconsider Fedora in some time. • It could be used for preservation also.

  7. Persistent URLs • Some countries have developed their own “easy” URN but based on standard. • You may use DOI but there are costs. Recomendation: It doesn´t matter which system you use, but use one.

  8. Economic sustainibility • General idea: it is a basic infrastructure, so it has some costs. • It should be not just a project. Its here to stay.

  9. Branding • Maybe the repositories should only be data providers. • Most access is done via Google. • Mark the document itself (logo, watermark, etc.) • Its a managers concern. Authors want to go to international repositories

  10. Any question?
