  1. RDA for Law CatalogersCataloging New Editions of Monographspresented at the AALL Annual Meeting 2012July 21, 2012 (revised July 31, 2012) George Prager New York University Law School

  2. Cataloging New Editions of Monographs Overview of presentation: A more in-depth look at my morning presentation • Focusing on new editions of monographs • When to treat as new work • When to treat as expression of same work • How to relate successive monographic editions • Whether they are considered new works or new expressions

  3. Cataloging New Editions of Monographs Review of general principles: differentiating works • RDA (6.27.1.1): Differentiate two works with same or similar preferred title LC practice: do so only for two works with otherwise same authorized access point (AAP) 2. RDA:record the elements either as additions to AAP for the work, as separate elements, or both LC practice:(due to MARC 21 limitations?) : always add to AAPs in cases of conflict, & optionally as separate elements

  4. Cataloging New Editions of Monographs Review of general principles: works (cont.): 3. Add any of the following: • Form of work • Date of work • Place of origin of work • Other distinguishing characteristics 4

  5. Cataloging New Editions of Monographs Review of general principles: expressions 1. Construct access points for all expressions of the same work by beginning with AAP for the work 2. Differentiate expressions of same work (RDA 6.27.3) LC practice: only in certain cases: translations, etc. Other expressions are identified by edition statements, date of publication, etc., in other parts of record

  6. Cataloging New Editions of Monographs New Editions of Monographs: Is it a new expression of the SAME work, or a new (related) work? Treat as a new work when: New edition is adaptation or revision of previous edition, and is presented chiefly as work of adapter/reviser (RDA 6.27.1.5)

  7. Cataloging New Editions of Monographs Treat as a new work (cont.): • Usually, creator of prior edition no longer in statement of responsibility (SOR) for title or for edition statement as author or co-author of work • OR:Same creator, but new resource with much different scope of content or coverage (sometimes indicated by title change or other information)

  8. Cataloging New Editions of Monographs Treat as a new work (cont.): • Do not collocate under AAP for earlier work • If AAPs for related works otherwise the same, differentiate them by making additions to AAP for new work (RDA/LCPS 6.27.1.9)

  9. Cataloging New Editions of Monographs Treating as a new work (cont.): • If applicable, follow special additions for laws (6.29.1.32), treaties, etc. (6.29.1.33), and other legal works (6.29.1.34) Referencing related works: • Recommended, but not required, to use one or more of RDA’s methods to relate works (RDA 24.1 and 25.1): identifier, structured description, unstructured description or an AAP

  10. Cataloging New Editions of Monographs Referencing related works (cont.): • LC recommends using unstructured description or AAP (7XX name/title), rather than linking entry fields to relate 2 monographic works • LC does not use 780/785 to relate monographic works (or expressions) to each other • No PCC policy

  11. Cataloging New Editions of Monographs Relationship designators for works: (Appendix J.2) • Expanded version of (work): • Expanded as (work): • Supersedes (work): • Superseded by (work): • Supersedes in part (work): • Superseded in part by (work):

  12. Cataloging New Editions of Monographs Relationship designators for works (cont.): • Do not use $i “Continues work:” and “Continued by work:” to relate 2 monographic works (RDA endorses only for serials) • Do not use relationship designator “Revision of:”, (applies only to expressions)

  13. Cataloging New Editions of Monographs Linking entry fields for monographic works: • MARC 780 02, 785 02 (No $i, displays: “Supersedes/Superseded by) ” • MARC 780 03, 785 03 (No $i, displays “Supersedes in part/Superseded in part by”) • MARC 787 with $i for more complex cases • Do not use MARC 775 to relate works

  14. Cataloging New Editions of Monographs Referencing related works: 100 1# $a Sacher, Sigismund, $e author. 245 1# #a Sacher on torts / $c Sigismund Sacher ; with the assistance of Junichiro Smith. 250 ## $a First edition. ------------------ 100 1# $a Smith, Junichiro, $e author. 245 1# $a Sacher on torts / $c Junichiro Smith. 250 ## $a Second edition. 700 1# $a Sacher, Sigismund. $t Sacher on torts.

  15. Cataloging New Editions of Monographs Treat as expression of SAME work when: • No evidence of major change in focus and: • Same creator when both editions have only one • For collaborative works: • First listed creator of earlier edition still in SOR for title proper or SOR for the edition (RDA 6.27.1.3) • Creator names may be in same or different order in later edition

  16. Cataloging New Editions of Monographs 100 1# $a Ferber, Brad, $e author. 245 10 $a RDA cataloging for dummies / $c Brad Ferber and John Frad. 250 ## $a First edition. ----------------- 100 1# $a Ferber, Brad, $e author. 245 10 $a RDA cataloging for dummies / $c John Frad and Brad Ferber. 250 ## $a Second edition. Treat as expressions of the same work, with same AAP for both editions; What would AACR2 do?

  17. Cataloging New Editions of Monographs Expressions of the same work (Cont.) Same creator, but title proper has changed: Use the preferred title of the original work or how it has become known in 130 or 240 if title proper of latest edition differs (RDA 6.27.1.5)

  18. Cataloging New Editions of Monographs Relating expressions of the same work: RDA (24.4, 26) allows the same techniques as for relating works: identifier, AAP, structured and unstructured descriptions LC recommends relating expressions by using unstructured description (500) or structured description (500, 580, or linking entry field)

  19. Cataloging New Editions of Monographs Referencing related expressions (cont.): Some expression level relationship designators to relate successive editions of monographs (Appendix J.3): • Revised as: • Revision of: • Supersedes (expression): • Superseded by (expression): • Supersedes in part (expression): • Superseded in part by (expression):

  20. Cataloging New Editions of Monographs Linking entry fields used to relate monographic expressions: • MARC 775 with: “$i Revision of/Revised as” • MARC 780 02, 785 02 (No $i, displays: “Supersedes/Superseded by) ” • MARC 780 03, 785 03 (No $i, displays “Supersedes in part/Superseded in part by”) • MARC 787 with $i for more complex cases

  21. Cataloging New Editions of Monographs Linking entry fields used to relate monographic expressions (cont.): Do not use “$i Continues (expression):”, “$i Continued by (expression):” (RDA does not endorse for monographs) Do not use MARC 21 equivalent: 780/785 2nd indicator “0” to relate monographs LC prefers 775; does not use 780/785 here

  22. Cataloging New Editions of Monographs 775 08 $i Revision of: $a Gullon, Ismael. $t An unvarnished history of TS-SIS. First edition. New York : Cataloging Press, 2009 … OR: 500 ## $a Revision of the author’s An unvarnished history of TS-SIS. • RDA allows, but LC does not usually add reciprocal link “775 08 $i “Revised as:” on record for prior edition (no PCC policy as yet) • Do you think this should be left up to cataloger?

  23. Cataloging New Editions of Monographs Relating expressions of same work cataloged in different cataloging codes: pre-RDA AAP differs • LC suggests (Revised editions of monographs, slides 19-21): • No need to recatalog related expression in RDA! • Name work in bib record according to RDA • Don’t use 130/240 or 7XX added entry • Optionally, use unstructured or structured description to relate expressions (500 or 775) • If cataloging in OCLC and wishing to use 775, simply use “insert from cited record” technique

  24. Cataloging New Editions of Monographs Example 1: RDA form of 1st creator’s name: Lenaerts, Koenraad Original edition: Constitutional law of the European Union / by KoenLenaerts and Piet Van Nuffel ; Robert Bray, editor. London : Sweet & Maxwell, 1999 Second edition: Constitutional law of the European Union / by KoenLenaerts and Piet Van Nuffel ; Robert Bray, editor. Second edition. London : Thomson/Sweet & Maxwell, c2005 Most common situation: same creator, same title. No need for uniform title

  25. Cataloging New Editions of Monographs Example 1 (cont.): Second edition: Constitutional law of the European Union / by KoenLenaerts and Piet Van Nuffel ; Robert Bray, editor. Second edition. London : Thomson/Sweet & Maxwell, c2005 Third edition: European Union law / by KoenLenaerts, Piet Van Nuffel ; editors, Robert Bray, Nathan Cambien. Third edition. London : Sweet & Maxwell, 2011 Same creator, different titles proper. Do we need uniform title here in RDA? What would AACR2 do?

  26. Cataloging New Editions of Monographs Example 1: Practice instructions: On three separate worksheets, give at leastthe following RDA elements (if applicable) for the 3 editions: Creator; Title proper; Preferred title for the work Statement of responsibility (SOR) relating to title proper Designation of edition; Date of publication Other person … associated with a work For the latest edition, also relate to prior edition using structured or unstructured description

  27. Cataloging New Editions of Monographs Example 1 (cont): RDA cataloging for original edition: Creator: Lenaerts, Koenraad, author Title proper: Constitutional law of the European Union Preferred title for the work: Constitutional law of the European Union SOR relating to title proper: by KoenLenaerts and Piet Van Nuffel ; Robert Bray, editor Date of publication: 1999 Other person, family, or corporate body associated with a work: Nuffel, Piet Van, author Bray, Robert, editor

  28. Cataloging New Editions of Monographs Example 1 (cont.): RDA cataloging for second edition: Creator: Lenaerts, Koenraad, author Title proper: Constitutional law of the European Union Preferred title for the work: Constitutional law of the European Union SOR relating to title proper: by KoenLenaerts and Piet Van Nuffel ; Robert Bray, editor Designation of edition: Second edition Date of publication: [2005] Other person, family, or corporate body associated with a work: Nuffel, Piet Van, author Bray, Robert, editor

  29. Cataloging New Editions of Monographs Example 1 (cont.): RDA cataloging for third edition: Creator: Lenaerts, Koenraad, author Title proper: European Union law Preferred title for the work: Constitutional law of the European Union SOR relating to title proper: by KoenLenaerts, Piet Van Nuffel ; editors, Robert Bray, Nathan Cambien

  30. Cataloging New Editions of Monographs Example 1 (cont.): RDA cataloging for third edition (slide 2 of 2): Designation of edition: Third edition Date of publication: 2011 Related expression: Revision of: Lenaerts, Konraad. Constitutional law of the European Union. Second edition. London : Thomson/Sweet & Maxwell, [2005] (If linked to AACR2 record in database, linking entry would be in AACR2 form)

  31. Creating New Editions of Monographs Example 1: Summary Same creator for all three editions; no drastic change in scope, so the three editions are considered successive expressions of the same work Since the third edition has a different title proper than the second edition, the editions are collocated with the same preferred title. Major change from AACR2, which would not use a uniform title, but instead an “edition history” note, and a “related work added entry” to earlier expression Optional but helpful to include structured description or unstructured note when prior edition has different title proper

  32. Creating New Editions of Monographs Example 2: Edition you are cataloging using RDA: Modern criminal procedure : cases, comments and questions / by Yale Kamisar, Wayne R. LaFave, Jerold H. Israel, Nancy J. King, Orin S. Kerr, Eve Brensike Primus. Thirteenth edition. St. Paul, MN : West, a Thomson Reuters business, c2012 --------- Prior edition: Modern criminal procedure : cases, comments, questions / Yale Kamisar, Wayne R. LaFave, Jerold H. Israel, Nancy J. King, Orin S. Kerr. Twelfth edition. St. Paul, MN : Thomson/West, c2008 AACR2 record for this edition in WorldCat

  33. Cataloging New Editions of Monographs Example 2 (cont): Practice instructions On a new worksheet, give at least the following RDA elements (if applicable) for the latest edition: Creator; Title proper Other title information SOR relating to title proper Designation of edition; Date of publication Structured or unstructured description of related expression (prior edition)

  34. Cataloging New Editions of Monographs Example 2 (cont): Edition you are cataloging: Creator:Kamisar, Yale, author Title proper: Modern criminal procedure Other title information: cases, comments and questions SORrelating to title proper: by Yale Kamisar, Wayne R. LaFave, Jerold H. Israel, Nancy J. King, Orin S. Kerr, Eve BrensikePrimus OR use: by Yale Kamisar [and five others]

  35. Cataloging New Editions of Monographs Example 2 (cont): Edition you are cataloging (slide 2 of 2), with AACR2 linking entry to prior edition: Designation of edition: Thirteenth edition Date of publication: [2012] Related expression: Revision of: Modern criminal procedure. 12th ed. St. Paul, MN : Thomson/West, c2008

  36. Cataloging New Editions of Monographs Example 2: Discussion points • 1. Is the newer edition a collaboration or a compilation? What do you do in case of doubt? (RDA 19.2.1.1, 6.27.1.3-6.27.1.4) • 2. What would be the AAP for this edition? • 3. Is it required to name all of the co-authors in the statement of responsibility? (RDA 2.4.1.5) • 3. Is it required to give access points for all of the co-authors? Do all the access points need to be justified? (RDA 19.2.1) • 4. If using a linking entry to the 12th edition, what form of entry would you use? Is it required to recatalog it according to RDA in order to provide the correct RDA form?
