What is PAL? • The mission of the PAL Peer Assistance and Leadership program is to enable young people to use their potential to make a difference in their lives, schools and communities. • One of the four main leadership groups on campus • PAL pledge • No elected positions; each and every PAL member is important and responsible for the success of the group! • Meetings take place every Tuesday, but most work is done outside of those meetings
What is PAL? • Major events: Red Ribbon Week, Appreciating Diversity Week, Yellow Ribbon Week, Friendship Week, Sea King Camp • Freshman Talks • Peer mentoring; new student tours • As leaders we always strive to help better our school and if you think you can help we’d love to have you join us!
PAL EVENTS • Sea King Camp: New CdM students are invited to attend this information session and tour of the school, led by PALs. • Red Ribbon Week: Reflecting our commitment to the PAL pledge, this event brings awareness to teenage drug and alcohol abuse. • Appreciating Diversity Week: One of our biggest events of the year, ADW celebrates diversity through speakers who share their incredible life stories (most recently, Jake Olson). • Friendship Week: Celebrates friendship and the formation of new friendships through High Five Day, Compliment Day, Hug Day, and Twin Day.
PAL EVENTS (continued) • Yellow Ribbon Week: This suicide prevention week brings awareness to the issue of teen suicide and strives to educate the student body on how to live a long, healthy, positive life. • De-Stress Week: Hosted the week before first semester finals, De-Stress Week helps students relax and head into finals week stress-free. • Spirit of Giving Month: The holiday season is a time of giving. PALs participate in the program Socks for Soldiers and adopt a family in need. • PAL CAMP: A summer retreat for PALs to plan for the upcoming school year, take the PAL pledge, and bond as a group.
Is PAL for you? • A PAL is: • Empathetic, caring, thoughtful, friendly • Determined to bring about positive change at CdM • Willing to take the PAL pledge and promote staying drug and alcohol free • Happy to be a role model among his or her peers
Obligations • All PALs must pledge to be drug and alcohol free during their time as a part of the Peer Assistance Leadership group. • You must attend PAL camp in the summer unless approved prior by an advisor (It’s fun and totally worth it! Trust us ) • You must commit to and complete your assigned jobs to the best of your ability • You are obligated to attend two PAL events/conferences per year, which means that you will miss at least two school days • Every Tuesday, PAL’s wear their PAL shirt and attend the meeting at lunch. • PARTICIPATION IS KEY! PALs are expected to be involved and contributing members throughout the year. • Remember: PAL has a huge presence at CdMbecause of the amazing work the PALs do! This means that administration, teachers, counselors, parents and peers are all looking to us to be positive role models, in school and outside of school. If these are not commitments that you are willing to make, please do not apply.
Application Process • Applications are available tonight! They can also be found in the counseling office and on the PAL website, beginning April 25. PAL applications are due on May 9th at1 pm in the Counseling Office. NO LATE APPLICATIONS ACCEPTED! • Applications will then be considered by the senior PALs and PAL advisors. At this point, a list of PAL applicants will be sent to all CdM teachers, who will then have the opportunity to share whether they think a student would be a good or bad fit for PAL and why. Most applicants will make it through this step to the interview. 3. Interview times will be posted by May 17 in the counseling office. Interviews will take place before school or at lunch. Students at other schools will be scheduled at 7:30 am. We will have 6-10 students per interview. Current seniors on PAL will be asking questions and Advisors are present. 4. On the last day of school (June 19st) by noon, the final list of PAL students (up to 30) will be posted on the Counseling door.
Things to consider before applying… • Sign up for PAL for the right reasons • You are a KIND person • You enjoy helping others • You will have the time to participate • Do not sign up if you’re using this as a resume builder • We have 1,600 students in high school and we only take up to 30 students
