  1. Different Grades of Steels Used To Manufacture Piston Pins If we seriously talk about the steel industry, there are over 3500 distinct grades of steel materials used by Piston Pin & Automotive Components Manufacturers for crafting various components. These grades of steel are encompassing unique chemical, physical, and environmental properties. In general, steel metal is made of carbon and iron; however, the amount of carbon and the contamination level and other additional alloying elements help determine the properties of each steel grade. The carbon content can range from 0. To 1.5% in steel, but the manufacturers often pick the grades of steel having only 0.1 to 0.25% of carbon. Elements like sulphur, manganese, and phosphorous are already present in all grades of steel. The element manganese offers beneficial effects while the other two i.e. sulphur and phosphorous put negative impact on the durability and strength of the steel. Distinct types of steel are produced as per the properties needed for the application, and manufacturers use variety of grading systems to differentiate steels on the basis of their properties. In general, steel is classified into four groups as per their chemical compositions:

  2. ↣ ↣ Carbon Steels ↣ ↣ Alloy Steels ↣ ↣ Tool Steels ↣ ↣ Stainless Steels Carbon steel has trace amounts of alloying elements and used for 90% of total production of steel. Carbon steels are further segregated into three groups depending on the amount of carbon present in them: ↣ ↣ Low carbon steels/ mild steels have up to 0.3% carbon ↣ ↣ Medium carbon steels contain 0.3 to 0.6% carbon ↣ ↣ High carbon steels have over 0.6% carbon Alloy steels have alloying elements like silicon, titanium, nickel, manganese, chromium, aluminum, copper, etc. in varying proportions to manipulate the properties of steel, for instance corrosion resistance, strength, ductility, hardness, form-ability, etc. Manufacturers make different applications using alloy steels, some applications are pipelines, transformers, auto parts, piston pins, electric motors, and power generators. Tool steel as tungsten, cobalt, molybdenum, and vanadium in different amount to enhance heat resistance and durability. Manufacturers use them for making cutting and drilling equipment. Stainless steel has 10-20% chromium and is highly corrosion resistant. If the stainless steel contains minimum 11% of chromium, steel is round 200 times more resistant to corrosion as compared to mild steel. Stainless steel is subdivided into 3 groups: ↣ ↣ Austenitic– this type of steel is non-magnetic and non heat-treatable. It has about 18% of chromium, 8% nickel, and less than 0.8% carbon. ↣ ↣ Ferritic– This type of steel has trace amount of nickel, 12-17% of chromium, and less than 1% of carbon. Manufacturers strengthen these steels by cold working. ↣ ↣ Martensitic– such steel has 11-17% chromium, less than 0.4% nickel and up to 1.2% carbon. Manufacturers use steels for making knives, dental and surgical equipment, and cutting tools. Piston Pins Manufacturers use alloy steel for their products range. You can contact the manufacturer nearby your location and avail quality piston rings for your equipment.
