The Various Functions of a Cylinder Liner and its Types Nearly all the power output of an engine depends on the capabilities of its cylinder. Working under high temperatures and pressure, a cylinder provides fuel and stability to an engine’s internal mechanisms. Since it fulfills such an essential need of engines, it must be protected and preserved from any and every damage. The two most unique inventions that have helped support the active life-cycle of cylinders are liner and sleeves. While the former directly gets involved in the cylinder processes, the latter facilitates the mechanical design of the engine. With the advent of new machinery, a number of engine designs have popped up, each of which possesses certain functionary demands. Few of these functions performed by cylinder liners of India include: 1.Forming a Friction Less Surface Liners installed in the inner walls of engine cylinders help in reducing the friction between piston rings. This, in turn, cuts down on the amount of lubricant consumed by the engine and the deposits of grease accumulated over its surfaces. 2.Facilitating Internal Heat Conduction Process Heavy pressure and energy demands produce enough latent heat in the engine that can jeopardize its mechanisms. On persistent exposure to high heat, the entire engine can break down, compromising its supporting machines as a result. By using the cylinder liners of India, technicians enhance the heat transfer processes amongst the engine units. The combusted heat from the piston rings is instantaneously transmitted to the coolant, thereby ensuring that the testing work conditions do not produce damages.
3.Preventing Leakage of the Engine’s Fuel Supply Even though such issues are a rarity in petroleum- or diesel-powered engines, fuel wastage is a common problem faced by compressed natural gas cylinders. To keep a check on the amount of fuel stored in engines, liners are installed onto its inner lining. Since such liners are made from compounds that are rich in iron, steel, etc., they are able to handle the high temperature and pressure. It is interesting to note that such a wide diversity of functions is provided by a singular element. But depending upon the particular needs of the engine, three types of liners have been designed by engineers. Each of them stands to serve certain functions more efficiently than the other. Thus, in case of an individual intending to install a liner in one’s engine, he/she must consider the following list of liner types and their specifications: Dry Liners In the simplest of terms, dry liners can be defined as the type of liners that stick to the engine block without coming in contact to its coolant. They do not facilitate heat conduction and their thin surface is chiseled with precise cutting and pits. Wet Liners As wet liners are installed in the internal linings of the engine block for enhancing the heat transfer process, they are particularly thick and made with conducting metals. Furthermore, their material is characteristically non-corrosive so that the coolant chemicals do not affect its quality. For a few engine types, they are manufactured with grooves instead of circular rings. Finned Liners In certain machines like for example automobiles, commonly used cylinder liners cannot suffice from preventing engine damages. For such cases, liners with fin-like irregularities on their surface are chosen. They create a fluent passageway for air to pass throughout the engine block, thereby cooling it down in the absence of coolants. The functional qualities of cylinder liners are delimited by their innovative designs and versatile structure, especially in the case of dry liners where it can be used to prevent erosion of engine parts as well. However, the diversity of distributors of cylinder liners in India, pose quite a problem for buyers as there is no measure to identify authentic sellers.
