Media. My magazine. Jess Callaghan 5070 G321 Final submission
I have chosen to do a Rock music magazine. I have chosen to do this genre of music magazine because I thought that it would be an interesting topic to look into and study more. I thought that doing a rock music magazine would give me a wide range of topics (like bands/ artists and also gigs etc) to study and pull some of the ideas from other rock magazines and put them in to my own. My target audience I have decided will be late teens to early 20’s. Even though most rock bands appeal to more mails than females I am creating my magazine so that all genders can read it and hopefully my magazine will appeal to both genders and make them want to read it. I also think that rock bands are more aimed at late teens and 20 year olds than it would be for any other age range so therefore it would be then silly for me to design my magazine for an audience that wouldn’t follow rock music. So over all I will aim to design my magazine for my target audience so that they will enjoy the magazine to the full. To help with that I have made a slide (underneath) to say what people I asked said they wanted from rock music magazines. The purpose of my magazine for my target audience is to entertain, I feel that all through my magazine should have information in it and although what is in it should be their to inform my audience the main target for my magazine is to entertain. I want my magazine to entertain the audience and the information in the magazine needs to be interesting yet informative. I would also like the magazine to have more of an entertainment value so that it is less boring and my target audience are more interested in what they are wearing. To help me decided what I wanted to design my magazine like I had to find out what other people thought and think about current magazines and also their expectations about rock music magazines. On the two slides underneath you can see what my survey entailed, how it was set out and also how people answered the questions to help me decide what was going to be on my own magazine. Doing the survey really help me to find out what my target audience would expect from this type of music magazine so that when I do my own magazine it meats my target audiences expectations perfectly. To also help my design my magazine I did a flat plan design first of ideas to what I would like my magazine to look like. When I did flat plan my magazine first it help because I was really able to see where i would want certain things to go and where they would look most effective on my page.
What people said they wanted from MY rock music magazine. Tina 16 = “Free gifts, variety of different bands and competitions to win tickets to gigs.” Jack 18 = “ I would want many different cover stories and interviews not just one main one and I would want it with unknown bands as well as well known bands. Nat 16 = “profiles on band members – what they wear, do in their spare time etc” Liz 17 = “interviews with bands and tour dates.” Dan 16 = “Coverage of new rock bands, a variety of rock genre: metal etc, coverage of latest albums and singers, up coming tours.” Conner 17 = “The main thing that I look for in a rock music magazine is the bands that are covered. If it’s a band that I like or it looks interesting then I will read it however if it looks boring and not eye catching then I will not pick it up and read it.” What my target audience Said they wanted from MY Rock music magazine! Emma 16 = “I would want information on different bands about gig’s” Charlotte 17 = “I want pictures of many different rock bands, and interviews with band members. I would also want reviews on new and up coming bands as well as all the ones people know about.” Alex 18 = “ when i buy a magazine the first thing i look for is the cover story, if that’s eye catching then ill read/ buy it, if you can do that on your magazine that’s good enough for me.” Tom 17 = “ A good free gifts, and information on how bands started and advice to wanna be artist on how to make something of them self's.”
Survey one evaluation. I decided that my target audience would be late teenagers to early adults (15 onwards to middle 20’s). So that my survey got the information that i needed from my survey i made sure i asked just this target audience. My target audience who i asked ranged from 16 year olds to 20 year olds. The first question i asked my target audience was “What would you expect to see on the front cover of a rock music magazine?”, i asked this question because i wanted to see what people would expect to see so that i could apply it to my own work when i started making my own magazine. Many people replied to the question that they would of course like to see a rock band on the front cover along with black colours, advertisements for free posters, bright text to compare with dark background, spiky fonts that also indicate the loudness that is needed for a rock band, adverts for gigs, the main image of the page as the background. Everybody also said that it must grab the audience’s attention. My second question was a lot simpler and easier to answer… “What colours would you expect to see on the front cover of a rock music magazine?”, Many of the people asked answered that they would expect to see dark, harsh colours, it was said that the expected to see blacks, reds, white and grey colours for lots of comparisons on the front cover. The third question on the survey read, “ What type of text would you expect to see on the front cover of a rock music magazine? (e.g Bold, soft etc). The answers most people gave were basically the same, bold, with large titles, harsh and big, stands out, people also said it needs to be in your face, and one person said cut out letters like a ransom note style to make it dramatic. “Would you expect to see many pictures or just one big on the front cover of a rock music magazine?” was the forth question i asked in my survey. Most people said that they would expect to see one big image as the main one as maybe the background and then a few smaller images surrounding it. Some people also said that they may expect to see a collage type effect on the front cover. Question 5 was “ what is the main thing you would expect to see on the front cover of a rock music magazine?”, in answer to this question in the survey most people said that they would expect to see the cover story of the main band on the front cover, artists or bands that have brought out an album or have toured, and the average answer was that people expected to see a picture of the band that has most coverage inside the magazine. Question 6 was about the price of the magazine and about how much people would be willing to pay for a rock magazine, and the main answer was that they would pay and expect to pay around £1.50 and they would not pay anymore that £4.
Issue number and date of issue. On every singe magazine so that the magazine is easy to recognise. Every one in the band wears black with red accessories. Band names needs to be big and bold. Bold text. Band name = the red To make image stand out more. Price. Needs to grab peoples attention. Maybe a slogan. About the band. Maybe behind the image. CAPITALS. Maybe a quote on the front cover from the band featured in the magazine. Initial ideas for my front cover. Title of the magazine. In big and eye catching text. Asymmetric layout. -reds -backs -whites. Colour themes Main image as the background to the front cover. Barcode. Informal language. Featuring the name of them bands in separate text boxes to make them stand out. Eye catching. Big and bold. Everyone in the image has to have eye contact with the audience.
More appealing on the eyes. Live reviews. Maybe a “order your magazine’s” part some where to help advertise the magazines. Album reviews. Features. Next week. Black white and red. Makes it more interesting. News. Text in a mixture of CAPITALS and lower case. This week. Colour theme Makes it more appealing to look at. Gigs. Easier to read. Initial ideas for my contents page. Page number on this page. Text set out in a asymmetric layout. To identify the start on the magazine. All sub heading need to be big and bold. To introduce the magazine. Note from the editor. 1 big sized image with 5 or 6 smaller one’s surrounding it. To make the magazine feel more personal. Eye catching. All page numbers that go with the sub headings need to be bold and eye catching. So that its not always the same thing. Images still need to be bold and eye catching so that the reader will want to read on through the magazine. Very noticeable. Wrote in the same colour themes. Makes it less boring. Images need to be a mix of bands and album covers. Varity.
Makes you want to read them 1st kind of thing. Eye catching. Makes it eye catching and different. Nicer to look at. Easier to read. Not to many images. Black and white images with just the red accessories showing. Stands out in the text. Connection from the front cover to the middle pages. Text in a asymmetric layout. Quotes. About the band featured on the front cover. Initial ideas for my double page spread. Image is background. Interesting. A film strip of images on one page. An connection on the page. Same colour theme. Maybe even some of the same images from the front. The article is going to be about the band “The red” realising their new/ first music video. Blacks, whites and reds. Ties the film strip into the article. Make the red really deep so it really stands out. Page number. Wrote in the same colour theme. Correspond the page number to the one written down on the contents page. Very eye catching this way. Needs to be bold and out standing.
Flat Planning. In flat planning I basically designed the out line of what I wanted on my front cover, my contents page and also my double page spread. This helped in the designing and making of my final magazine as I already sort of knew where I wanted things to go etc so I already had a head start on the designing part of my magazine and I also found that I could ask what people thought of my flat planning ideas and then adapt and change things to what my target audience aid about the magazine so far. After doing the flat planning it was then easier for me to put the ideas I had for the flat planning into the real thing and because I knew what I wanted the finished pieces to look like it was then easier to decide what I needed to write, for my article for example.
Flat planning – front page. Title. Quote or slogan Main image as background image Information about main image. Information about the images. Issue number Extra text box for other information. Price. Barcode.

Survey two evaluation. I decided that my target audience would be late teenagers to early adults (15 onwards to middle 20’s). So that my survey got the information that i needed from my survey i made sure i asked just this target audience. My target audience who i asked ranged from 16 year olds to 20 year olds. In question one I asked my target audience what they thought of my flat plan of my front cover. They answered with they thought it was good that the cover did not seem overly crowded, they also said that it was easy to follow and understand. The fat that the images over lapping are a nice idea and will look very effective. My target audience also said that there was a good balance of images and information on the page to make it look equal and effective. The layout is asymmetrical which my audience said would look very effective. My second question that I asked my target audience was what they thought of my flat plan for my contents page. They said that it was a good organised plan, that had a good mix of small and big images. They said that the images and page numbers were a cleaver idea, they also mentioned that the page looked packed full of information and pictures which is very good and they said that this engages the reader. My third question was about my flat plan for my double page spread. My target audience said about this flat plan that the big broken image on one of the ages looked very different and succeeded in grabbing the readers attention, it was very eye catching they said. They also said that the idea for the quote going across the page will look very effective and will grab peoples attention very well. The only piece of improvement I got for this piece was to make the title of the page bigger. For my question four I asked my target audience was “the colour theme for my magazine is red, white and black, do you that this is appropriate for a rock music magazine?” my target audience answered with yes, it is suitable and it does work well with the Rock theme, they also said that many rock music magazines use these’s types of colour themes so it would tie well in with them as well. People also said that the colours compliment one-another well as they are bold colours that grab your attention and are eye catching. Question 5 was about the Rock bands name, “The red” I asked my audience if I thought that this names was appropriate for a rock band, my target audience said yes, it ties in with the colour theme witch is also very good, and it does sound like a rock bands name. I asked my target audience about the price of my magazine in question 6, I said to my target market that I was going to be charging £2.50 for my magazine, would you be willing to pay that price for a rock music magazine, they mostly said yes and that it was a good and reasonable price for a magazine, they also said that it was a good price for the amount of information you’ll be getting within the magazine.
What people thought about the title of my magazine. Lauren 16 = “I think its a good name for a rock magazine, its different to any other one and its good that it doesn’t say the obvious.” Jack 18 = “ In my opinion it sounds like a pretty cool name. Its very eye catching to read and would grab and audiences attention easily.” Tina 17 = “ Cool, sounds actually quite classy with a hidden edge to it.” Charlotte 17 = “It stands out to me because it sounds very new and different, I have never herd of a magazine being called this before and to me it sounds very cool.” Jess 17 = “I think that the magazines name does sound different, it also sounds like its like the magazine saying to the audience I'm going on a mission to give you what you want.” My magazine will be called MISSION. Paul 18 = “wicked, sounds like something really new and flash.” Claire 17 = “ To me it sounds really exciting.” Emma 16 = “Its different and there's nothing like it I've herd of before.” Mark 20 = “sounds cool! I really like it, stands out great, I would buy it if I saw it in a shop.” Dan 16 = “Mission sounds like the type of magazine that if you saw on a stand would make you want to pick it up and read it, that’s because the title is new and diverse, its very unique.” April 16 = “with this as the title it almost makes me think that the magazine is on a ‘mission’ to provide the best information it can. Really cool … like a hidden meaning.”
Picture evaluations. I have decided to look at these images because many of them are in black and white. I decided that for my own images I would like some if not all to be in black and white as I feel that black and white images look very effective to look at. After looking at many both colour and black and white images and after studying them both in detail I think that (in my opinion) that black and white images do look better and so for my own magazine I am going to include black and white images on all of my front page, my contents page and my double page spread. I also know that after studying this set of images I would like to take my pictures of the band out side, maybe in the forest, by trees or a lake of some sort to maybe indicate that the bands new/ first music video is filmed out side in nature, this could also be connected to the article because then the article can talk about the music video being filmed out in the wild, it could also maybe tie in with what the song is about in the music video. I also had the idea that because my images are going to be in black and white then it would be an interesting idea for the only colour on the page to be the red assessors that the bed members wear. This would the tie in with the bands name and the ides for the clothing that I have planned for the band to wear, so everything would tie in with the image I want to use. I like the idea of having the main singer in colour and everybody and everything else in black and white. Having looking at the images very closely, I also like the idea of including words (for example song lyrics)in the picture for example ... So for one of my images i would like to use this idea and apply it to my own work. Writing at the top.
People I used to create my rock band. Elizabeth Winterton. Claire Bevan. Nat Tunnicliffe
How I think my photo shoot went. I think that the photo shoot I did on the 26th on November went really well, with the help of Claire Bevan, Nat Tunnicliffe, Elizabeth Winterton, Lauren Nash and Emma Tenant. I managed to take all of the photos I needed, and some that I didn’t even think about taking before Emma Tenant (another media student) helped me to decided some of the pictures. I wish now that the people I used for the members of my band to be dressed in the way I wanted them to be however because the photo shoot was short notice so if I ever did this again then I would give the people a lot more notice and also send them an email to explain exactly what I am planning to and also what I would like them to dress like. I mainly got most of the photo’s that I wanted and I also got lots of shots that I hadn’t thought of before going out their with ‘the band’ and seeing what shots worked and what shots didn’t. this made the photo shoot good because I was open to lots of different shots and images that I would never have thought before to have taken, and some people in my media class helped with this. The shots that I took that were by the brick walls seemed to work the best compared to the photos that were taken in side in the hall. The photos that were taken in the hall all came out very dark and also a bit blurry. They looked good in some places because it looked like the band was performing live on stage. However because of how blurry and dark most of the pictures came out they were going had to use and edit. The photos put side seemed to work the best, however their were a few problems with getting the images right, as because it was a sunny day, there were lots of shadows etc in my pitchers that I didn’t really want to show, I had to think carefully about where to stand to get the image just the way I wanted it. This was quite tricky but I also knew that if I did have to have a shadow in one of my images then I could edit it out, or edit the pitcher to exactly where I want it.
My favourite images and images I am going to use . These are the images that i am maybe going to use on my contents page.
My favourite images and images I am going to use . Images that could use for either front cover or double page spread.
Picture Edits
Picture edit evaluations. I think that my edits of my images went okay, I like the way they have turned out compared to what they started as. I like the images more in black and white than they are in colour. I think, after comparing the same image both in colour and in black and white I feel that with the way my magazine front cover is laid out and designed that it works better if the pictures are plainer aka black and white. I changed many of the lighting in the pictures. I did this because I felt that it gave the pictures more depth and it gave an audience something more to look at.
Ideas for article. My basic ideas for my article is for it to be about the band featured on the front cover. The main story will be about the band realising their first music video for their new song. The music video will be based out side, in the wild and all the pictures I take will reflect that. For all the pictures of the band that are featured in my magazine the images will be taken out side by trees or nature of some sort. I would also like to tie this in with what the bands song is about, for instance the song could be called ‘The Wild’ and so the music video is filmed out in nature to tie in with the song. I am also thinking of including quotes from the song on the double page spread. I think that this would look different and interesting having new and unseen things on the page. Having Quotes from the bands new song on the page may make the audience more interested as they have never seen or herd the new song so it may be effective in grabbing their attention. However some of my pictures will also be taken inside, so there is a verity of different images in the magazine about the band. Mostly they will be out side but some will be pictures from them ‘live’ and also some images that are from a photo shoot in side a building. Having many different types of images will give the pages more depth than if all the pictures were of the same thing. I would like the article to have many different parts to it. So for example I would like one part of the article to introduce the band, another part to be an interview with the band, another part talking about the the bands next gig etc. intro Feature info Next gig Main interview
My Article. … Then their dream came true. Once upon a time their were 3 friends who always dreamed of becoming the next ‘big’ thing they thought it was never going to happen until one day their dream came true… Today in the mission interview room we have THE RED, a new band this is becoming more and more famous by the day, people all over the world listen to their music and there gigs all around the uk are booking up so fast its almost unbelievable … but we all must admit that they are a fresh new band with good ideas and their music is to DIE for … why wouldn’t we love them? Claire, Nat and Liz were invited to the mission studios to talk about their new and up-coming music video which is airing in two weeks. Everyone is extremely excited about the release of the new song and video and it seems extra special as it’s the bands first music video. Nat: I still remember when we use to make our own videos or our songs (laughter all around) it seems strange now that the real thing is actually happening. M: What is the video about? Liz: Well the song is called ‘on the outside’ and the video is basically about two people in a relationship and about how that relationship looks better on the outside rather that what's going on in the inside. M: So when is the new song airing then? Liz: Well the songs firstly being aired on the one show in a week and hen the video will be released after that. M: So now you’ve finished with this ‘new’ song, is there anything else on the cards? Nat: Well there are a few things that were working on at the minuet. Claire: but we’d like to keep that quite till we fully know what is going to happen. M: not even a tiny hint of what is to expect? Nat: Well we could tell you some things… Liz: We are planning on bringing out another's album (she grinned at me insanely) we have already been working on it for a while now and are very excited for its release next spring. M: so its defiantly coming out next spring then? Claire: Oh hell yeah! “Relationship’s always look better form the out side!” The red’s new song and video will be out within the next month and we are all exited the band want on to tell me that they are booked in for the for see able future to do gigs around the UK. There next gig is at the Ricoh arena on the 7th of next month. We have your exclusive interview right here. M: so first, are you excited about your first ever music video being aired in just a few days? Claire: Of course, we’ve been waiting for this for years now, and are so excited that are dreams are finally coming true. “Pretend is what we live for?”
