EL Tip of the week: CALP: Cognitive academic language proficiency • CALP includes language for formal academic learning and for written texts in content areas. CALP skills also encompass reading, writing, and thinking about subject-area content material. Students also use CALP skills to compare, classify, synthesize, evaluate, and infer. CALP skills are abstract and context reduced. Many students can say all the words in a reading passage and possibly memorize definitions of vocabulary words, but they still may not comprehend the text. CALP requires students to sharpening their cognitive abilities and learn new concepts. I am here to help you break down the content to a comprehensible level for our EL students and help them meet your objectives. The teachers in SCSD #1 do a great job of communicating with me when students are falling behind. Let's continue to communicate so that these kids who are on the brink of fluency in English continue to grow and become more proficient in English. 3/19/12
