I. 1988 Election A) Many American’s were doing well economically, feeling no need for change they elected Reagan's VP George Bush.
II. The Collapse of Communist Regimes • The East Germans tore down the Berlin Wall in 1989 • 1991- 14 non-Russian republics declared their independence from the Soviet Union • Reformers then pushed Gorbachev out of office because he was working too slowly towards democracy. • 1992-Bush and President Boris Yelstin sign an agreement officially ending the cold war.
III. The Persian Gulf War • Iraq had acquired huge war debts in the 1980s from fighting Iran. • They invaded their tiny oil rich neighbor Kuwait, claiming that the territory was part of Iraq. • President Bush built a coalition of nations and then launched an attack Against Iraq to liberate Kuwait
D) The ground war lasted less than a week and Kuwait was liberated. E) Some people wanted Bush to invade Iraq and go after Hussein but Bush refused
IV. Domestic Issues A) Recession hit in 1990 and the nation had rising deficits from so much defense spending. B) Bush was forced to recant his campaign promise and raised taxes.
