DRIVING SAFETYFour corners safety network PRESENTED BY LT. MICAH DOERING NEW MEXICO STATE POLICE
OBJECTIVES • GENERAL AWARENESS OF DRIVING SAFETY • DISTRACTED DRIVING • DRIVING IN INCLEMENT CONDITIONS • AWARENESS OF TIME / DISTANCE ISSUES • AWARENESS OF PERCEPTION / REACTION ISSUES • SEATBELT USAGE • DWI / DUI AWARENESS
DISTRACTED DRIVING • DISTRACTED DRIVING INCLUDES ALMOST ANYTHING YOU CAN IMAGINE!!!!! • SUCH AS…… • TEXTING • PHONE CALLS • IN-CAB COMPUTERS • QUICK LUNCH BETWEEN LOCATIONS • ANIMALS IN LAP • ANGRY BIRDS • HAIR / MAKE UP • FATIGUE
TEXTING WHILE DRIVING • Effective as of July 1, 2014 • Generally states: It is prohibited to type, view, or read texts, emails, pictures, etc. while driving. • This includes while you are stopped at stop signs and signals!!!
DISTRACTED DRIVING THE CARELESS DRIVING STATUTE COVERS ALL THESE THINGS. IT STATES: • Any person operating a vehicle on the highway shall give his full time and entire attention to the operation of the vehicle.
DISTRACTED DRIVING CARELESS DRIVING CONTINUES TO SAY: • Any person who operates a vehicle in a careless, inattentive or imprudent manner, without due regard for the width, grade, curves, corners, traffic, weather, and road conditions and all other attendant circumstances is guilty of a misdemeanor.
INCLEMENT WEATHER SINCE THE CARELESS DRIVING STATUTE MENTIONS ROAD & WEATHER CONDITIONS WE SHOULD PERHAPS ADDRESS IT!!! HERE WE GO!!!!!
INCLEMENT WEATHER • THE SLICKNESS OF THE ROAD SURFACE IS REFERED TO AS THE COEFFICIENT OF FRICTION • THIS VARIES DEPENDING ON WHAT IS ON THE ROAD • IE: DRY, WET, SNOW, ICE • EACH BRINGS IT’S OWN SET OF CHALLENGES
INCLEMENT WEATHER LET’S TALK ABOUT STOPPING DISTANCES • IT TAKES LONGER TO STOP THE MORE SLICK THE ROAD SURFACE IS • CMV’S TAKE 20-30% LONGER REGARDLESS OF ROAD SURFACE • WE WILL ASSUME 100% BRAKING EFFICIENCY FOR THIS EXERCISE
INCLEMENT WEATHER A VEHICLE IS TRAVELLING AT 50 MPH….. HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE TO STOP????
INCLEMENT WEATHER • DRY SURFACE – (f= .70) – 119 Feet • WET SURFACE – (f = .45) – 185 Feet • PACKED SNOW– (f = .20) – 416 Feet • ICY SURFACE – (f = .10) – 833 Feet
INCLEMENT WEATHER • BOTTOM LINE OF THIS INFORMATION IS…. • SLOW DOWN!!!!!!!
INCLEMENT WEATHER • AS A SIDE NOTE….. • 4 WHEEL DRIVE DOES NOT HELP YOU STOP FASTER. • IT ONLY HELPS YOUR VEHICLE TRACK BETTER. • ABS STOPS ONLY MARGINALLY FASTER • ABS DOES ALLOW FOR STEERING DURING A SKID
DRY STOPS WHAT ABOUT STOPPING ON DRY PAVEMENT ONLY???
DRY STOPS • @ 20 MPH = 19 FT • @ 40 MPH = 76 FT • @ 60 MPH = 171 FT • @ 80 MPH = 304 FT • @ 100 MPH = 476 FT
PERCEPTION / REACTION • PERCEPTION / REACTION TIME IS THE TIME IT TAKES YOUR BRAIN TO FIGURE OUT SOMETHING IS WRONG AND DECIDE WHAT TO DO ABOUT IT. • THIS TIME DOES NOT INCLUDE THE TIME IT TAKES TO EXECUTE THE ACTION • THE NATIONAL AVERAGE IS AROUND 1.5 TO 1.6 SECONDS • THIS MAY NOT SEEM LIKE MUCH BUT LET’S GO FURTHER TO UNDERSTAND
PERCEPTION / REACTION • HOW FAST IS 60 MPH????? • PLEASE DESCRIBE………
PERCEPTION / REACTION • WE NEED TO THINK IN FPS NOT MPH • 68 MPH CONVERTS TO 100 FPS!! • THAT’S A FOOTBALL FIELD EVERY 3 SECONDS!!!! • NOW HOW FAST IS IT???????
SEATBELTS • ALWAYS WEAR YOUR SEATBELTS!!! DUH. • 2007 STUDY IN NM SHOWED 70% OF DECEASED OCCUPANTS COULD HAVE BEEN SAVED BY SEATBLET USAGE!!! • IN 15 YEARS I HAVE YET TO WORK A CRASH WHERE SEATBLETS CAUSED THE FATALITY.
DWI / DUI • LEGAL LIMIT IS .O8 FOR ALCOHOL • CMV DRIVER’S IS .04 • IMPAIRMENT CAN START AS LOW AS .02. • THIS INCLUDES ALCOHOL LEFT IN YOUR SYSTEM FROM LAST NIGHT!!!! • BUZZING / HANGING IS STILL DWI!!!
DWI / DUI • THE STATE STATUTE COVERS DRUGS TOO • IT INCLUDES ILLICIT STREET DRUGS AND PRESCRIPTION MEDICATION • JUST BECAUSE THE DOCTOR PRESCRIBED IT DOES NOT MEAN YOU SHOULD BE DRIVING
