  1. Zirconium By: Gabriela Tjandra 7.1 #9 Science

  2. Basic Facts • It is actually a metal ore • Gray - ish white metal • Also considered as rare earth • Zirconium is not 100% metal ore but only part of it • Its quite hard to find (part of rare earth) • Melting Point: 2125 k (1851 c) • Boiling Point: 4650 k (4376 c) • Melbourne and South Africa • (Biggest production of Zircon sand)

  3. It’s FormsThere are two types: Zirconium Cubical Ore Zirconium Ore It is found with other minerals Magnetite Monazite (radio active) By using ‘gravity separation’ technology Used for (pure zirconium): Metallurgy Ceramic Glaze • Rare and Hard • It has more value • Rare as diamonds • Mainly used for jewelry • Artificially • For watches or rings

  4. Zirconium Uses • It is also used for nuclear energy • Low absorption cross for neutrons • Quite resistant to corrosion by the seawater and other acids and alkali • Used by chemical industries • Also used in day-to-day materials like: • Getters in vacuum tubes • Component in surgical appliances • Photo flashbulbs

  5. Zirconium Carbonate is used in poison ivy lotion • Also combine with urushiol • When zirconium merges with zinc, it becomes magnetic at a temperature below 35 k (-238 c) • Zircon (zirconium oxide) can be formed into gemstones • Zirconium combined with niobium would become a superconductive magnets in low temperature

  6. Other Facts • Zircon is a primary gemstone of zirconium • Also known as: • Jargon • Hyacinth • Jacinth • Liguria • Wasn’t known to contain a new element until 1789 • Impure oxide and zircon can be for laboratory appliances that withstand heat shock, furnace lining • also by the glass and ceramic industries as refectory material
