Online vs. CD-ROM • CD and DVD popular formats for subject area encyclopedias until late ’90s. • Advantage is immediate access; not dependent on Internet. • Disadvantages are storage and need for updates. • Online database delivery solves need for storage and continuous updates. • Online resources are accessed through a remote server on the Internet.
Free vs. Subscription • Free databases include; public domain, government websites, virtual museums, public education sites, and not-for-profit sources. • Subscription databases charge a site license fee to access periodical articles, regularly updated articles for topical encyclopedias.
