  1. Juan Daniel’s Fútbol Frog An Engineering Adventure Meredith Bauer Courtney Peters

  2. The Story • Juan Daniel loves to play fútbol • He lives near El Imposible in El Salvador • El Imposible is an endangered rainforest • During a soccer game, he finds a frog • The frog becomes a “lucky charm” • Challenge: keep frog healthy until Championship game

  3. The Challenge • Create an environment for the frog • Build a model membrane that allows water in • Keep water at constant drip • Water should not flood the frog • The frog should always be wet

  4. The Process • Poked hole in cup; created our sponge frog • Filled cup with cotton balls • Covered bottom of cup with plastic wrap • Poke holes in plastic wrap • Place frog in container • Place mesh over top of container • Pour water through the membrane device

  5. Problems We Faced • Not enough cotton balls (started with 0) • Holes were too big in plastic wrap • Pouring the water into a small hole • Getting the amount of water correct • Flowed too fast • Flowed too slow/got stuck in cup

  6. Improvements • Filled cup completely with cotton balls • Used fine-point wire to poke holes • Used a pitcher with a spout to pour

  7. Future Improvements • Use wire mesh instead of cloth mesh • Find a way to cut a bigger hole in the cup • Try different materials that were not available • Use materials that weren’t suggested in book • Use more natural materials • Leaves • Grass • Rocks

  8. Pictures

  9. Pictures

  10. Engineering Design Process • Ask: How do we keep the frog wet? • Imagine: Different materials • Plan: Created the design • Create: Built the membrane device • Improve: More cotton balls, future possibilities
