Background • Patient comprehension of medication is a key factor affecting patient health outcomes • Literacy level and lack of common language between patient and healthcare provider are barriers to patient comprehension
Background • Studies have shown that using pictographic instructions to supplement written and oral instructions increases patient comprehension 1,2 • Pictograms have been shown to increase short-term and long-term (after 4 weeks) memory of complex medical instructions in patients who had less than fifth grade reading skills 3,4 1 Houts P.E. et al, using pictographs to enhance recall of spoken medical instructions II.
