  3. POST-PARTUM DOULAwhat is a Doula? • New parents know how difficult it is to come back home with a new baby, especially if it is the first one. • The first few weeks are the most critical, where most families need help and support. Post-partum doulas are experienced women, who provide assistance on infant feeding, basic newborn care, and physical and emotional support after delivery. • They provide support to the whole family, helping them to find their role in the process, as opposed to a baby nurse who takes care of the baby exclusively.

  4. Doula: services provided • Breastfeeding support • Light housekeeping • Running errands • Basic newborn care (diapering, bathing, feeding) • Baby soothing techniques • Sibling care • Referral to local resources (parenting classes, pediatrician, lactation support)

  5. Life insurance • Mandatory to plan child’s financial security • It is an insurance that will pay the beneficiary a pre-determined amount of money in case of death, to replace for the lost income or to create an education fund for the child • Anyone with a dependent family member needs a life insurance • Most common types of life insurance: term life insurance and whole life insurance • Consult a financial expert to determine the best plan

  6. WILL • Although the subject of death is a taboo people hate to talk about, new parents have the responsibility towards their offspring to have a will, in order to insure the financial future of the children, and their guardian after one’s death. • The will includes: • Distribution of property and wealth • Designate a guardian for children • Healthcare directives, life support • Contact a lawyer who can best assist you with the will.

  7. Packing for the hospital • The mother: • Health insurance • Nursing bras/breast pads • Nursing pillow, nightgown, slippers, socks, toiletries, magazines, glasses • The baby: • Car seat • Outfits • Hat, socks, receiving blankets, newborn diapers, wipes, mittens

  8. Packing for the hospital • The partner: • Pajamas, toiletries, video-still camera, cash money • The siblings - Crayons, coloring books, toys, snacks - Gift from big brother/sister to baby -Gift from mom and baby to big brother/sister to manage jealousy.
