Acquisition of a Pulsed Laser Deposition System for Research and Educational Training in Materials Science Kartik Ghosh, Missouri State University DMR 0321187 Research: This DMR award supports the acquisition of a PLD system for research and educational training in materials science. Electrical, magnetic, and optical properties have been investigated in various oxide-based electronic materials. High quality epitaxial as well as nanostructured thin films of these materials have been grown on various substrates such as sapphire, silicon, and quartz using PLD. More concentration was on oxide based dilute magnetic semiconductors which have potential use in novel spin- electronic device applications, ranging from electro-optical switches to qubits for quantum computing. X-ray diffraction data indicating high quality oriented thin films of spintronic materials grown using NSF-funded PLD
Acquisition of a Pulsed Laser Deposition System for Research and Educational Training in Materials Science Kartik Ghosh, Missouri State University DMR 0321187 Education: The PLD system has enhanced the quality of research and educational programs at Missouri State University. Since the acquisition of the PLD system, four students have completed their undergraduate research projects with the PI resulting in publications in refereed journals and proceedings and presentations in national meetings. Four MS graduate students completed their MS thesis using the PLD system. Most of the students joined graduate school in materials science and related areas and rest of them are working in high-tech semiconductor industry. Three undergraduate and four MS graduate students are excited to work with the newly installed PLD system
