PC Support & Repair Chapter 13 Advanced Laptops & Portable Devices
Objectives • After completing this chapter, you will meet these objectives: • Describe Bluetooth technology. • Describe infrared technology. • Describe cellular WAN technology. • Describe Wi-Fi technology. • Describe satellite technology.
Bluetooth • Wireless, short distance communication between devices • Device can connect up to 7 others • WPAN • About 33 feet • IEEE 802.15.1 • 2.4GHz • Low power, cost, size • Security through PIN
Infrared • Low power, short range • Line of sight • Can’t go through walls • 3’ or less with computers • Printer, keyboard, mouse
Cellular WAN • Data access through cellular network • Needs adapter
Wi-Fi • 802.11a, b, g, n • B, g, n use 2.4GHz • A uses 5GHz • Enable security or use VPN • WPA/WPA2 (Wi-Fi Protected Access) • 128-bit encryption • Authentication
Satellite • For rural or remote user • Faster then dial-up, slower than DSL • High cost • Satellite dish, modem, coax cable • Bad weather can interfere
Review • Which wireless specifies WPAN? • 802.15.1 • Which wireless transmits with line-of-sight? • Infrared • Why is 802.11a not compatible with g? • A is on 5GHz • What kind of encryption is best for Wi-Fi & how many bit? • WPA/WPA2 128-bit
Repairs • Describe repairs for laptops and portable devices
Repair or Replace? • CRU • Customer Replaceable Unit • Battery, RAM • FRU • Field Replaceable Unit • Not for customer to do • Motherboard, LCD, keyboard • B4 u fix, back up data & remove power, check warranty
Lab • 13.2 Investigate Repair Centers
Selecting Components • Select batteries. • Select a docking station or port replicator. • Select storage devices. • Select additional RAM.
Selecting Laptop Components • Retail Pack or OEM • Retail • Documentation, warranty, drivers included • OEM • Little or no packaging, shorter warranty, good for system builders, can make more money
Selecting Batteries • What are signs of a bad battery? • Test or try with a known good one • Replace with same type • Ni-Cad, NiMH, Li-Ion • Handle with care • Can explode • Dispose/recycle
Selecting Storage Devices • CRU • Internal • Behind a cover on bottom • Magnetic 2.5” with platters • SSD with no moving parts • Uses less power • External • USB or FireWire 1394 • Optical
Selecting RAM • Some of RAM used for graphics • SODIMM • Check how many slots, type • Remove battery & unplug! • Check POST, BIOS, or System Properties after adding to verify
Review • What is the IEEE standard? • 1394 • What type of battery need to be drained & then recharged? • Ni-Cad • Before repairing a laptop, what three things should you do? • Backup the data, remove all power sources, check warranty • What danger do laptop batteries represent? • They can explode
Preventive Maintenance for Laptops • Describe how to schedule and perform maintenance for laptops. • Explain how to manage data version control between desktops and laptops.
Maintenance • Preventive maintenance • Cleaning • Air, mild cleaning, cotton swabs • Hard drive (cleanup & defrag) • Software • Unplug & remove battery before cleaning
