Aquarius NOAA’s Underwater research Station Presented by Bethany Sharp
First off… Saturation Diving • Under normal circumstances, divers are restricted to one hour per day at depths below 20 meters. • Aquarius gives divers virtually unlimited dive time for weeks at a time.
The station • Stationed 3 ½ miles off the coast of Key Largo, FL in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. • Mounted 62 feet below the surface.
The Station • 3 parts: • Baseplate • Habitat • Life Support Buoy (LSB) • The habitat is used for living and conducting research over the course of a 10-day mission.
Research to date • Coral bleaching due to UV radiation exposure • Quantity and diversity of sponges in reef systems • Nutrient pollution from human wastes • Feeding, reproduction, and colonization of corals
NEEMO • NASA Extreme Environment Mission Operations • Underwater training helps train astronauts for space missions.
Decompression • Takes place in the habitat. • Pressure is slowly decreased over the course of 17 hours. • Aquanauts are met in the wet porch by ascent divers, who escort them to the surface where they are picked up by boats.
