  2. February 9, 2011 EQ: How did problems with France intensify the split between the Federalists and Democratic Republicans? Objectives: -Discuss the rising tensions between the United States and France. -Evaluate the new American President John Adams navigates the US away from war. -Investigate the growing split in viewpoints between the Federalists and Democratic Republicans. Homework: none

The Scandalous XYZ Affair -France viewed the actions of the US as betraying the original alliance they made during the Revolutionary War. -They were so angry with the Americans that they started attacking US merchant Ships Why are the French so angry with the United States? -The newly elected President, John Adams, did not want relations with the French to get worse. -He decided to send secret diplomats to France. They were so secret that the 3 French agents were only named X, Y and Z.

  4. Double Secret Diplomatic Talks French Demands: United States must pay a $250,000 bribe and lend several million dollars over a few years. United States Response: “We will pay not a sixpence!” When all this became public the US citizens were demanding war against the French To War?!?!? -With the demand for war on the rise, President Adams asked to increase the size of the army and rebuild the navy. -Between 1798-1800 the US and the French fought an undeclared naval war against the French.

  5. How did the conflict end? Rows 2, 4 and 6 you must create sentences that explain the end of the XYZ Affair out of these key words: John Adams, 1800, Federalists and Republicans Rows 1, 3 and 5 will create a tombstone of John Adams quote located on the last paragraph in the section labeled “War Fever.” (Pg 299) Underneath the tombstone explain the sarcasm in John Adams quote. Make sure your neighbor is informed of your work.

  6. Political Cartoon Follow the directions on the worksheet you received today. Refer to Pg 299 for an example of a political cartoon to generate an idea.
