  1. WELCOME TO BASHA HIGH SCHOOL CLASS OF 2016!

  2. How to See Your Counselor • To make an appointment, students should come to Guidance before/after school, or during lunch and schedule a time with our Guidance Assistant. • You can see your counselor before school, after school or during lunch • An “on-call” response counselor is available everyday for walk-in students. Please note that in order to visit with your student’s assigned counselor an appointment is recommended. • Students grade 9-12 will be seen by counselors during classroom units throughout the year.

  5. AIMS AIMS testing will begin the spring of the student’s sophomore year. Writing, Reading, Math and Science will be tested (for Freshmen in Honors Biology the Science AIMS will be tested during Freshman year). Students must pass writing, reading and math at this time to graduate from any AZ school- science is to be determined by the state. Students who do not pass one or more of the three tests required for graduation will be re-tested their junior year and senior year as needed. Students wishing to re-test to exceed will sign up in August and December of their junior year. It is imperative that every student sit for every testing date until the criteria are met or they will not be considered for further consideration for graduation per AZ Dept of Ed.

  6. PSAT, SAT, ACT PSAT is the preliminary SAT. To be taken during sophomore and junior year. Used as a guide for the progress expected for the SAT. National Merit Scholarship is based on PSAT junior year. SAT college entrance exam. To be taken spring of junior year, summer prior to senior year or fall of senior year. Most in-state universities expect a 1040 combined reading and math. ACT college entrance exam. To be taken spring of junior year, summer prior to senior year or fall of senior year. Most in-state universities expect a 22.

  7. Testing Information • The ACT/SAT Informational Night will be in mid September- please check the Guidance website in September for more information. Information regarding ACT, SAT, PSAT, PLAN, and test prep options will be discussed on this night. • PSAT testing will be administered Saturday, October 20, 2012 at BHS.  • PLAN testing will be administered Saturday, December 17, 2012 at BHS. 

  8. GradesAll credits should be completed at Basha unless a prior approval form and signatures have been gathered from alpha counselor. *Report cards are issued every 9 weeks each year- first quarter handed to student, 2nd quarter mailed home, 3rd quarter handed to student and 4th quarter mailed home *Your student will also receive progress reports at the 4th week of each quarter. *The semester grades issue credit for passing grades of a D or higher. Each semester is worth .5 credits per course. *Please update your credit check (obtain this from your counselor) each time you receive a semester report card.

Credit Recovery • Summer school will be available for certain courses for students who fail, want to accelerate or do grade replacement. • Students may choose to add the failed course back into their schedule for the following year to earn the missing credit but this means the student is considered off track for graduation.

  10. Basha Graduation Requirements • 4 English • 4 math • 3 lab science • 3 social studies • 1 PE • .5 health • 1 fine art/vocational • 5.5 electives

In-State University Requirements Required 16 high school core courses – completed with cumulative 2.0 grade point average in each subject area: • 4 years of English • 4 years of Math (Math 1; Math 2; Math 3; Honors Pre-Calculus; AP Statistics; Math 4) • 3 years of Lab Science (Investigative Science; Biology; Physics; Applied Biological Systems; Chemistry; Human Biology) (Ag Science 1 and 2 together count as 1 lab science and 1 elective science) • 2 years of Social Studies • 2 years of Foreign Language (must be 2 years of the same language- we recommend consecutive years) • 1 year of Fine Art (designated Music, Art or Drama classes) Assured Admission Requirements: • Top 25% of graduation class and completion of ALL 16 core requirements with a 3.0 GPA in each core area. (SAT Reasoning or ACT score must be on file)

ABOR Honors High Tuition Waiver 25% tuition waiver for first year at ASU, U of A, NAU- you must be accepted in order to receive this scholarship so make sure you apply at an in-state school in AZ. This may be renewed by the state at their discretion. 3.5 un-weighted GPA for required 16 core courses; and exceed on writing, reading and math or exceed on two and earn a 3 or higher on 2 AP exams; and earn a 1300 on SAT reading and math or a 28 composite on ACT. All A’s and B’s in 16 core courses- no C’s, D’s, F’s Exceptions for 16 core courses: Spanish 2 instead of Spanish 1 and Spanish 2 (this applies for all foreign languages); math through math year 4 or higher instead of 4 years of math www.ade.state.az.us for any other questions please refer to website listed. How can I help my student prepare for life after high school? • Log onto http://azcis.intocareers.org • username: bashahs password: 4azcis02 • Have your student take the IDEA test (go with first reactions and be quick) each year, you will be amazed how often their interests change! • Check out different careers that interest your student- regarding employment outlook, education, and salary! • Research the different colleges and universities across the US. Then compare studies, tuition, room and board and much more to the options in Arizona! Play it safe and always apply to at least one in state school! • Check the Basha web site for scholarships each year and weekly their senior year and the Career Center!

  14. TIPS TO SUCCESS • Get involved! See your counselor for a list of clubs and sports to join! • Do your homework! Most problems occur when you get behind on homework- don’t let this be you! • Get organized- need help?? See your counselor!!! • Go to class! • A student should attend 90% of class sessions to receive credit • Contact your counselor with any problem or question- get to know your counselor!!!
