Op Art • “Optical Art” developed in the 1960s • First Op Art painting – Victor Vasarely’s “Zebra”, 1938 • Op Art exists to fool the eye, and to create visual tension (often creates the illusion of movement) • Op Art is, almost exclusively, non-representational • The elements used (color, line, shape) are chosen carefully to achieve maximum effect. • Positive and negative space are of equal importance - op art cannot exist without both
